Free Etihad Guest Gold status match for Qantas frequent flyers

Free Etihad Guest Gold status match for Qantas frequent flyers

UPDATE | The terms and conditions of Etihad's status match offer have been revised since the deal was launched: firstly limiting it to select countries, and then again to include Australia on that list.

Aussie frequent flyers can continue to apply for a status match with Etihad in the manner detailed below, which also provides lounge access and priority boarding perks when flying with Virgin Australia.

PREVIOUS | Qantas frequent flyers should act now to take advantage of a special 'status match' promotion being offered by Etihad Airways for free Gold status in the Etihad Guest program.

Of course, this deal isn't restricted only to Qantas – top-tier members of almost any airline's frequent flyer scheme can apply, except for Virgin Australia Velocity members and those of Etihad Airways Partners airlines.

For those who aren't familiar with the concept of a status match: Etihad's doing this to encourage customers of other airlines to try Etihad for their next trip by ensuring that other status-based privileges such as priority check-in, lounge access, extra checked luggage, additional frequent flyer points etc are not lost because they have no Etihad status.

And you won't lose your original status with Qantas, Emirates or any other airline – this is not a trade-in. You get to keep that and also add a gold Etihad Guest card to your wallet or purse.

As an added bonus, your gold Etihad Guest card also lands you VIP treatment with Virgin Australia when it comes to lounge access and priority boarding.

Applying for free Etihad Guest gold status

Before diving in, you'll need to hold Gold or higher status with any airline (except Virgin Australia and Etihad's other partners, as we've already pointed out), such as Qantas or Emirates Gold or Platinum, or even Gold or Diamond with Cathay Pacific's Marco Polo Club.

You also don't need to already be a member of the Etihad Guest loyalty program to match your status across – you can either join free-of-charge before submitting your status match application, or can provide the necessary details via email and your account will be created for you.

If that's you, shoot off an email to [email protected] with the following:

  1. your Etihad Guest membership number for existing members or your full name, email address, DOB, postal address and telephone number for non-members
  2. scanned copy or photograph of your existing Gold card from another airline's loyalty scheme and "your latest miles statement"

That's it, but meeting these criteria doesn't mean you will automatically be bumped up to Etihad Guest Gold status.

Etihad warns that "only a limited number of gold cards will be issued and Etihad Guest reserves the right to select the successful applicants."

What you get from Etihad Guest gold status

If you meet those qualification criteria for Etihad Guest gold status it's definitely worth applying.

Etihad Guest Gold sits one rung beneath the program's primo Gold Elite club but the Gold Etihad Guest card still gives you a grab-bag of perks such as

  • 50% extra miles on every Etihad flight
  • access to the Al Reem Lounge in Abu Dhabi and Etihad's business class lounges worldwide for yourself and a guest, even if you're flying in economy – such as the airline's Sydney Airport lounge
  • an extra 15kg of checked baggage and priority baggage handling
  • priority check-in and boarding plus fast-track immigration

Etihad's growing league of affiliated airlines including Virgin Australia and Airberlin will also recognise your Etihad Guest Gold status to offer similar treatment, including access to VA's lounges and Airberlin's 'Exclusive Waiting Areas'.

So if you don't already have status with those airlines' own frequent flyer schemes, adding a free Etihad Guest Gold card to your wallet is a great way to guarantee lounge access when flying with Etihad and its growing web of partners.

I imagine more than a few Qantas Gold/Platinums already hold Virgin Australia Gold/Platinum (and hence reciprocal rights on Etihad services) but it can't hurt to expand your wallet to another card just to cover all bases.

Unfortunately the offier is not available for Australian residents.

This offer is only applicable to individuals based in UAE, UK, USA, Saudi Arabia, France, Switzerland, China and Japan

It was available to Australian readers (and everyone else) when  the article was written – seems the terms & conditions have now been tightened to that specific set of countries.

That specific set of countries has been revised again to include Australia, so if you haven't already applied, now is your chance!

Seems it's changed the T&C's again, because I've just checked the offer page to confirm what's just been reported by Loyalty Lobby, and Etihad States:

This offer is only applicable to individuals based in UAE, UK, USA, Australia, Saudi Arabia, France, Switzerland, China and Japan. Only a limited number of Gold cards will be issued and Etihad Guest reserves the right to select the successful applicants. All applications should be received before 15 March 2015. This tier match promotion does not extend to members of the frequent flyer programmmes of Etihad Airways Partners (Air Lingus, airberlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Alitalia, Jet Airways) & Virgin Australia. Only gold cards with airline loyalty programmes will be considered. If the requested documents are not clear or in case of incomplete personal details your application will not be processed. Any decision towards acceptance/rejection of any application received remains exclusively with Etihad Guest. This offer is for existing Etihad Guest base, silver and non-Etihad Guest members. Current Etihad Guest miles balance for existing base, silver members will be carried forward at the time of upgrade to Etihad Guest Gold. Etihad Guest reserves the right to withdraw this promotion at any time without any prior notice.

You put Australia in, You put Australia out, then you put Australia in and you shake it all about... Lol.

Does anyone know if Etihad Gold will get you access to Virgin domestic lounges (when flying VA, natch)?

Hi Kate,

This is covered in the article above, but just in case you missed it, yes – Etihad Gold provides access to Virgin Australia's domestic lounges when flying onwards with VA.

So I got status matched to Emirates Gold (using a VA Gold status).

I am flying Malaysia Airlines in a few months to Europe.

I tweeted Emirates asking if I get access to their lounges, and they said yes.

I emailed Emirates asking the same question, and they said no.

Anyone know for certain if I can access Emitrates lounges throughout Europe on a MAH ticket?

Hi Daina,

This article is about Etihad rather than Emirates, so may I suggest asking your question in our dedicated Q&A area where it will likely be seen by more readers who can assist.

Can I use ETIHAD lounges when flying on MA flights?

Interesting to compare the level of service that I received in Etihad coach as a gold member compared to on a return flight with Virgin. Like chalk and cheese - Etihad cabin crewbrought us the Business class offerings in wine and nuts etc - Virgin extended no such luxuries...

As a Etihad gold you are only entilted to the domestic VA lounge in Syndey.

you can utilize Etihad lounge only if you're flying VAto LAX or to AUH

I have complained with Eithad a dozen time but they were only able to send me the link to their webpage.

I was a few times sent to the AirNZ lounge from checkin staff but rejected at the lounge.....

i gave up
