The Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, located in the heart of Beijing, will finally open its doors in early 2019 after previously being slated for a 2017 opening.

This will be the chain’s first property in China’s capital and is named after the lively Wangfujing district in which it is located.

The 73-room boutique hotel will occupy the top two floors of WF Central, a lifestyle retail centre on Wangfujing Street that’s a stone’s throw from the Forbidden City and the CBD of Beijing.

The busy location has plenty of parking and is well served by public transportation as well, namely Wangfujing Station of Metro Line 1, Dengshikou Station of Line 5 and upcoming Wangfujing North Station on Line 8.

Within walking distance are the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the National Museum and the National Art Museum of China. The historic hutongs (alleyways) of Beijing, known for their charming courtyard homes, are also dotted around the district, as are ancient, tucked-away temples.

Business and leisure travellers alike will appreciate the central location of the hotel and can expect the usual luxurious amenities expected of a contemporary property, including floor-to-ceiling windows, marble-tiled bathrooms, the latest technology, and a minimum room size of 55 square metres.

The Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing will have two stylish restaurants and rooftop bar – all with access to a garden terrace. MO Bar will serve innovative cocktails and feature resident and international DJs.

Café Zi will offer all-day dining, specialising in Asian cuisine and featuring a signature lunchtime dim sum selection. Mandarin Grill + Bar will feature classic grill-style dishes.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing will have four suites offering beauty treatments, as well as a 25-metre, glass-roofed pool.

If you're thinking about booking your stay here, don't forget to sign up for the free 'Fans of MO' program, which instantly offers you two selected benefits out of a few choices, including a potentially early 12 pm check-in, 4 pm late check-out, complimentary breakfast and more.

From 2019, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group will be operating 34 properties across the world with new hotels opening in Dubai and Doha, as well as Beijing.

What happened to the Beijing Mandarin Oriental that was scheduled to open in 2009/10 in the Rem Koolhaas building as part of the CCTV complex? before the NYE fire? My understanding is that it was weeks away from opening, and the fit out virtually completed. Since the structure was not damaged in the fire, and it has reportedly been rebuilt - what happened?
