Hawaiian Airlines to merge with Alaska Airlines

Will the Honolulu-based carrier now become a member of the Oneworld alliance?

Hawaiian Airlines to merge with Alaska Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines will become part of Alaska Airlines in a US$1.9bn deal which could also see Hawaiian become part of the Oneworld alliance.

Under the acquisition plan, which is expected to be fully in place by mid-2025, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines will continue operating as seperate brands with their respective hubs at Seattle and Honolulu, albeit “on a single operating platform” from a business perspective

“Honolulu will become a key Alaska Airlines hub, enabling greater international connectivity for West Coast travellers throughout the Asia-Pacific region with one-stop service through Hawai’i,” the airlines said in a joint statement.

“The combination preserves and expands high-quality, best-in-class product offerings with price points to make air travel accessible to a wide range of consumers across a range of cabin classes, including greater choice between Alaska Airlines' high-value, low-fare options and Hawaiian Airlines' international and long-haul product on par with network carriers.”

Hawaiian Airlines has been struggling since the Covid-19 pandemic and expects to post another annual loss for 2023; Alaska Airlines says its purchase includes covering US$900m of Hawaiian Airlines debt.

The boards of both airlines have approved the deal, and Hawaiian Airlines shareholders are expected to wave it through thanks to a hefty premium being offered on shares, although the merger must also be permitted by US regulators.

Alaska Airlines maintains a mostly domestic or North American network with a fleet of single-aisle jets, while Hawaiian Airlines connects the US mainland to Asia and the South Pacific, and has twelve Boeing 787 Dreamliners due for delivery from early 2024.

The ‘complementary networks’ of both airlines carry almost 55 million passengers each year, with less than 3% of their routes overlapping.

Alaska Airlines sees the Hawaiian Airlines network as complementary to its own.

Will Hawaiian Airlines join Oneworld?

Both carriers “will be supported by a single, compelling loyalty offering” – in other words, Alaska’s own Mileage Plan frequent flyer scheme will replace the HawaiianMiles platform and swell Alaska’s books to an estimated 11.2 million members.

Hawaiian Airlines says the status and miles held by HawaiianMiles members will be transferred to Mileage Plan, including matching its Pualani Elite Gold and Platinum members to Alaska’s equivalent MVP Gold tiers.

This will deliver “the ability to earn and redeem miles on 29 global partners and receive elite benefits on the full complement of Oneworld Alliance airlines, expanded global lounge access and benefits of the combined program’s co-brand credit card.”

It could also provide a pathway for Hawaiian Airlines to become a member of Oneworld, either in a de facto arrangement as an arm of Alaska Airlines or a fully-fledged member.

This could play out in three ways:

  • Under Alaska's aegis and sponsorship, Hawaiian Airlines could apply to become a full member of Oneworld, or
  • Hawaiian Airlines could become a Oneworld Connect member, along the same lines as Fiji Airways – this model delivers a core set of benefits on a handful of supporting airlines, but not across all Oneworld members, or
  • Hawaiian Airlines would remain outside Oneworld but its passengers would enjoy some status perks on Alaska Airlines, while also using their Alaska Mileage Plan membership to earn and burn when flying on Oneworld airlines – essentially mirroring the relationship of Qantas and its low-cost sibling Jetstar.

Alaska Airlines is Oneworld’s newest member, having joined in March 2021, with Oman Air set to follow next year.

The buyout could also see Virgin Australia lose Hawaiian Airlines as one of its Velocity Frequent Flyer partners, although Oneworld exclusivity doesn’t always apply, with Qatar Airways notably being a partner to both Qantas and Virgin Australia.

This will either see Hawaiian become a full member of OneWorld, or a 'OneWorld Lite' member like Fiji Airways, or it'll be more like what Jetstar is to OneWorld. But hopefully Hawaiian will become a full member, how great would that be!

Let's hope it is not a repeat of Alaska's takeover of Virgin America where Alaska identified the best parts of Virgin America and threw them all in the bin.

Virgin America, Jetblue and Hawaiian are by far the best US airlines or were by far if so Hawaiian merges Alaska I swear I will lose it.

Yes, that was sad to see Virgin America disappear, but I don't think Alaskan ever promised Virgin would remain, and especially as they were closer to being competitors. Hawaiian is a very good fit for Alaskan and I think it'd be brand suicide to replace the Hawaiian brand with Alaskan, you can't imagine two airline brands that are so different in the images they conjure up!

I see this as being more like the IAG set-up - one company operating multiple airline brands.

It's not the merger of brands that is the concern, it is the merger of product and culture.  VX was miles away from AS in both and AS chose to throw it all away for a product that is just another very ordinary domestic product.

GReedy corporate take overs leads to higher prices.

Great news and more choice for oneworld FF's potentially.

With regard to name, can you image a Hawaiian based carrier with the name Alaskan?!

Isn’t JH on the board of Hawaiian Airlines, and maybe we have a new Air Berlin where we can use either partnership (VA and One World) and those Alaskan points are always a good grab.

If the takeover goes through, there will be no Hawaiian Board.  At best, HA will just be a brand name of Alaska.

It is fascinating though.  JH, by virtue of her HA Board role, would have known about the takeover for quite a while given the takeover does not appear hostile.  She would have also probably been restricted in what she could say to VA management but she would have had it in the back of her mind when strategising future alliances.

And because JH knew about the takeover is there something else happening in her work life that we don't know about? How many minority companies that get taken over then senior members get plum jobs in the majority company.

Go Figure, watch this space!!!!

I’m curious about the lack of direct services from Singapore to Honolulu.  Would seem to be in range with current aircraft.  Maybe Hawaiian will be able to expand routes in their new structure.

Is Alaskan trying to be another Bega Cheese and buy all the other brands (Vegemite etc), if so is Virgin Australia also on there radar for global reach?

There is a 4th oneworld option that you didn't mention.

It isn't just full member, oneworld connect or nothing. There is also affiliate membership, like QantasLink, American Eagle or Horizon.

On Greg XL's comment, the only Asian airlines which fly to HNL are Japanese and S.Korean. I think there are a couple of reasons. First, Hawaii is a leisure destination, and if you are SQ or CX, for example, you don't want to use up one of your (limited in number) US destinations with low revenue holiday makers, rather than more profitable business passengers. Second, if you are dealing with vacationers, it is a lot cheaper to go on holiday in somewhere like Bali or Thailand from SE Asia so probably the demand is not there.
