Vietjet launches Sydney-Hanoi flights

Vietjet is adding flights between Sydney and Hanoi to its growing Australian network, in direct competition to rival Vietnam Airlines.

In addition to VietJet’s daily flights from Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City, the twice-weekly service to Hanoi will run from 8 June:

  • flight VJ96 will depart Sydney every Thursday and Sunday at 8:30am, arriving in Hanoi at 4pm the same day
  • flight VJ95 is wheels-up from Hanoi on Tuesday and Sunday at 5:10pm time, reaching Sydney at 6:10am the following day

These flights follow the 3 June launch of twice-weekly flights between Melbourne and Hanoi.

Although Vietjet is broadly considered a low-cost carrier, its international Airbus A330s do offer a premium business class cabin.

However, this is not quite business class as you know it: the 12 leather seats recline into an older-style angled flatbed.

The Skyboss Business cabin comprises two rows of six.

Our tip for relaxing or catching some shut-eye on the 10-hour flight: try to set up the seat as a recliner rather than a sloping lie-flat bed, and wedge a pillow behind your lower back for added comfort.

Perks of Vietjet’s premium cabin include 40kg of checked baggage and 18kg carry-on, along with lounge access, priority check-in and complimentary meals.

(It’s worth noting Vietjet doesn’t offer any inflight entertainment, so a good book or some pre-downloaded content on your own device is essential.)

The new Sydney and Melbourne routes are the airline’s first Australian services to the Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi.

Having launched into the Australian market in April 2023, Vietjet has aggressively expanded its footprint to a solid 58 flights per week connecting Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide to the major business and commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City.

Maybe its a cultural thing but I just can't take those uniforms seriously. I saw them walk through SYD recently and it was like a high school marching band from the US midwest in the 1950s.

Seems like a solid option if priced appropriately.
