If you’re looking for a new drop to try over the holidays, award-winning Tasmanian distillery Sullivans Cove will be releasing its first special edition Double Cask single malt whisky in late November.
The new whisky is made with a combination of individually selected French oak ex-tawny and American oak ex-bourbon barrels. Normally bottled at 40% ABV, the special edition Double Cask will instead be bottled at 49.6% ABV and left unfiltered.
Sullivans Cove Head Distiller Patrick Maguire says “the higher alcohol percentage holds the body of the spirit perfectly and packs a flavour punch.”
Being unfiltered, this special edition Double Cask may have very small particles in the whisky, otherwise known as “flock”. These represent an array of flavours and textures that contribute to the whisky’s character and mouthfeel.
Sullivans Cove Distillery holds the oldest stocks of any Australian whisky distillery, with Double Cask often containing whisky as old as seventeen years. Double Cask has won multiple international awards, including Best Australian single malt 13-20 years at the World Whiskies Awards this year.
There are only 957 bottles of this special edition Double Cask. Members of the Sullivans Cove mailing list will have access to purchase this whisky prior to general release.
Double Cask DC095 will be priced at $170 per bottle, which means there’s no mark-up to the usual Double Cask pricing despite the unique nature of this release. You can sign up for the Sullivan's Cove mailing list here.
