From a pure distance perspective, isn't it more like BNE-LAX? Not sure how winds etc effect the flight time. Would certainly make a brilliant and relaxing stopover to/from London! : )

Have any members here heard (or have inside info) about when these flights will be bookable? How long did Melbourne take from the announcement to being available? Fingers crossed for some decent award availability.

Are the 787s certified to fly the SYD-JNB and SYD-SCL routes direct? I remember ETOPS used to be an issue, but that was some time ago. Upgrading from the 747s currently on those routes would be awesome. LA is flying direct MEL-SCL so I assume that certification issues have been resolved?
