Virgin Australia adds more flights to Indonesia with SilkAir

Virgin Australia is spreading its wings a little more throughout Asia with the launch of new codeshare flights to Indonesia via SilkAir, the regional arm of Virgin partner Singapore Airlines.

The five new destinations are Bandung (airport code BDO), Balikpapan (BPN), Lombok (LOP), Palembang (PLM) and Solo (SOC), although of course are no direct flights from Australia – you'll first need to make your way to Singapore on SQ.

The SilkAir flights are operated by either Airbus A319 or Airbus A320 aircraft with business class and economy class, and you can earn Velocity frequent flyer points and status credits on the SilkAir flights or redeem your Velocity points for your ticket to Indonesia.

"Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and one of Australia’s most important trading partners, with over eleven billion dollars’ worth of trade between the two countries in 2012" explains Virgin Australia Chief Commercial Officer Judith Crompton.

"We now have Virgin Australia marketing code on ten destinations across Indonesia that can be accessed on one ticket from all Virgin Australia serviced airports across Australia and New Zealand."

Another day, another new Virgin Australia codeshare airline.  They really are the masters  of  gaining passengers without any of them stepping foot on a VA plane. I look at them as the most confused airline in Australia with no clear direction.

I think they have a very clear direction: Screw Qantas.

Good luck screwing an airline that has over 90 years experience and with a frequent flyer membership where at least 1 in 3 Australians is a member.

It's a vision. It's an overarching goal. It's like world peace. It's about as clear in principle as banning nuclear weapons, and is as difficult to execute as the Schlieffen Plan.
