Virgin Australia's travel money card gets South African Rand

IN BRIEF | Virgin Australia's Global Wallet travel money card has added the South African Rand to its list of foreign currencies in a nod to Virgin's strengthened alliance with former Qantas partner South African Airways.

A 'virtual wallet' for the South African Rand (ZAR) is now listed in the Global Wallet's website and app, making it easy for Aussie dollars to be converted into Rands before you fly or indeed at any time during your trip.

The prepaid Global Wallet card can also be used to withdraw Rands from ATMs in South Africa, with a per-withdrawal fee of ZAR20.

Virgin Australia's tie-up with South African Airways includes a codeshare on SAA's daily Perth-Johannesburg flight plus the ability to earn Velocity frequent flyer points and status credits.

2014 saw Qantas wind down its frequent flyer partnership with South African Airways after axing reciprocal codesharing with SAA between Johannesburg and both Sydney and Perth.
