The only way from my knowledge is taking a detour via Queenstown. So fly into Queenstown and taking a domestic flight to Akl. I actually did this last xmas with the family and it was quite a bit cheaper than flying direct from Melb to Akl.
Other option is to wait till the Virgin / Air NZ partnership is fully up and running. Launch date is TBC.

The unilateral VA/NZ partnership is still subject to clearance from the NZCC. ACCC already gave it the all clear.
