All the comments here have been interesting reading.

Watson - I would feel the same as you if I was in your situation. But to judge just how bad this is...its all relative. What are we comparing this poor breakfast to?

What Qantas use to be like in the past? They're cost cutting because they need to. A lot of other airlines are too. Higher fuel costs / LCC / subsidised middle eastern airlines amongst others.

Asian/Middle Eastern airlines? Well, we know these airlines are better on many fronts. They aren't hemorrhaging money so they can afford to. (And no, I doubt Qantas would be doing any better financially if they served better breakfasts)

Qantas business class? I think sometimes after being use to flying J for work or enjoy the lounges, I get a bit of shock when I fly Y. Maybe you don't fly Y regularly and don't realise that's the general quality of Y nowadays??

All that to say, I feel like this is excusable in economy. For me personally if I was in that situation I would find it inexcusable, but if I was the financial analyst running the numbers, I think I would make the same call.

"What are we comparing this poor breakfast to?"

Domestic mainline can serve up a more satisfying meal on the morning peak flights to MEL, so I'm using that as my benchmark. (To be fair, the domestic mainline hot dinner has no appetiser.)

Rest assured, I fly mostly in Y. And even though I would like the hot breakfast to come back for the Asian red-eyes, I honestly don't expect it to return anytime soon (if at all). I would, however, much prefer it if the 'cafe breakfast' was a little more substantial - the domestic mainline breakfast tray would, I think, strike the right balance between quality and cost.

I know why it's happening, though; but I see that as the wrong strategy. Bean counters cutting corners will only serve to devalue the Qantas product to an uncompetitive low; from the higher, more strategy-ish point of view, I think they're playing the wrong game. At the same time, though, they're in the rut between old A330s and the 789 Dreamliners.

I can only hope they'll get through this air pocket intact enough to get 789s to fight back with.

I think this is pretty much bog standard average for economy on a flight of this duration.

I flew BA SIN-SYD and it was similar - the main meal was dinner after takeoff.  'Breakfast' was some kind of packaged pastry and a juice.

Similar to Emirates BKK-SYD last year.  One hot meal after take off followed by a breakfast if it could be called that of a cellophaned croissant and a cuplet of juice.

You can't expect Australian Cereal, Fresh Australian Milk and cut up apples ex SINGAPORE like you would SYD-MEL.

The catering centres in asia can't match it, it will never taste the same or look the same. FACT.

How do you propose that some get a choice of breakfast in Y class and others don't ? Do the 6 cabin crew ( for the 270 discerning ready to pounce on all things Qantas passengers ) wheel the carts through the dark cabin and wake those who have placed a ' wake me for breakfast '  sticker on their forehead ??

Let me guess, you'd also like your tray collected before the other 269 pax so that you can sleep more after your cooked breakfast and can't stand that it takes so long for yours to be collected ?

I fly a lot also, I get your concern re full service airline, SQ aren't rocking my world lately, and scoot...don't start me.

Since everyone seems to be getting far more worked up that I ever was originally, let's go!

"You can't expect Australian Cereal, Fresh Australian Milk and cut up apples ex SINGAPORE like you would SYD-MEL.

Err, hello? We're talking about Singapore here, not some regional port like Kota Bharu. Singapore has access to good milk, good cereal, good yogurt, good bakeries and good fruit. If I can pick it up in the T2 NTUC FairPrice, catering can definitely source it.

Sure, it isn't the exact same produce as sourced in MEL or SYD, but to suggest SIN catering is substandard because the produce is allegedly never going to be as good borders on insulting.

LOL NO

No, just serve it like they serve the special meal for breakfast. They managed to do that this flight.

"Let me guess, you'd also like your tray collected before the other 269 pax so that you can sleep more after your cooked breakfast and can't stand that it takes so long for yours to be collected ?"

LOL WAT

No, actually. I can sleep some more with my tray table down. ^_^

The Malay word we are looking for is geram.
