We are arriving at terminal 4 at LAX at 1920. Can we transfer to TBIT without going through security? Also if we need to pass through security is 4 hrs enough for a connection time?
T4 is the American Airlines terminal - it's a 5-10min walk to TBIT - exit T4, turn left, follow the signs.
4hrs is more than enough - to get a guage on how busy TBIT will be, simply google LAX and look for departure flights from TBIT in the evening (do this in the AM Australian time so you pick up the evening schedule).
I've always found security at TBIT to be reasonably easy - especially comared to T4 which can't be described accurately on this family-friendly forum!
Are you flying QF outbound of LAX? If so, there is a T4 > TBIT airside bus (Gate 44 if I remember correctly?) - just show your BP to staff.
If you're not flying QF, it's not a bad walk by any stretch anyways, the two terminals are side-by-side and is only about a 5 minute stroll (I love walking between them after coming in from SYD to stretch my legs before a JFK sector).
4 hours is definitely more than enough, even if you're arriving from an intl flight - if for some reason you should be cutting it close, the OW transfer support staff are pretty good (they have named signs just after the aerobridge). I wouldn't clear security close to boarding time, though - peak times can be hell!
The answer is yes you will have to go thru security at TBIT it unavoidable.Like Mark said lines are genrally not that bad,and can be further expedited if you are a first or business customer or retain a US security clearance card.TBIT is a little more than a 150 yard walk from terminal 4 and giving youself two hours to tranfer is more than enough.

Cool. Looks as if not much to worry about in terms of connection times for the outbound QF. Thanks for the advice guys. Much appreciated.
