Are we in Australia being taken for mugs try booking a business class flight with Emirates from the UK to Brisbane then reverse it there's a difference of 2368 dollars Aussie travellers have to pay

No Australians are not mugs,all about supply and demand.Pagans get over it as it happens on most all routes and their Australian alliance partner does it more than any other carrie.r

Yup, Suppy and Demand as Robert says. Also pricing to the market. This is why I haven't purchased a ticket ex-Australia for nearly two years now.

Also, keep in mind that by booking from the UK, you won't actually be booking the same flights – and thus the price will differ.
For example, booking Brisbane-Dubai-London-Dubai-Brisbane is a different set of flights (or, at least on different dates) to London-Dubai-Brisbane-Dubai-London.
If you travel there frequently, I'd recommend booking one itinerary that is Brisbane-London-Brisbane, with the return a distant date in the future when you'll be travelling, and then making a second booking of London-Brisbane-London that slots in between the two... that way, you'll at least pay the UK price on half of your trip, and if you travel there monthly, you could book 11 of those UK itineraries, with the ex-Australia itinerary taking you there in month 1 and bringing you home in month 12. ;)

One is only taken for a mug when one succumbs to the taking.
A great many do. That is why airlines are able to get away with it.
If you are not happy, then modify your behaviour to achieve a more financially viable outcome.
The public have woken up to it in the Retail sector. The airline industry will follow suit.
Well said.But just when do you beleive this will happen! I suspect with little to no Australian based competition and alliance partners unwilling to invest in the Australian mayjor player, Qf will protect itsself for survival and this will go on for some years under the federal goverment cloke.What is going on now is as close to QF and some other carriers got in the dark days of bi-laterel arrangements and out dated treaties that screwed Australian based pax .And the public has not woken up.You may have..they have not.

If you are an infrequent flyer you get hammered ! There was a time ,I'm talking a loooong time , when you could get tickets bought in Europe and use them which ever way you wanted but air travel was so expensive in relitave terms it didn't matter ! Now you can fly nearly anywhere at any time so I suppose it is supply and demand and we are a hub to nowhere !
I think those really affected are australian based business travellers. Leisure travellers can work the system even if they travel infrequently. Australian business simply suck it up and consider it part and parcel of operating out of Australia. The moment they can off shore they'll do it.

Yes its all chnaged to the detriment of all, especially past couple years. These days I don't fly a lot, couple doms and 2 or 3 int. so I use some QFF points but mostly miles from USA and book awards, they are cheap when the 35%/100% offers are on, been very lucky to date.
Sometimes I fly to HKG then out of there, usually find award flights to near anywhere (especially Europe) and taxes & charges are a joke comred to OZ.
In May used 120K miles for 2 x J tickets OZ to HKG return cost was a mere AUD$3K normally if bought here close to $12K.
You may recall a few years back a group of investors led by a hedge fund excutive and a former QF ceo tried to take control of Qantas.It was most sadly rejected and the stock price is lower than ever ,higher operations costs than ever and the worst management than ever.People on this site think Qantas is the flavour of the month,i am plat and only fly it trans pacific and Aust Dom only.This carrier can not be sustained unless it gets off shore and quick.A J and his side sticks can do what the want but no QF tek Crew and cabin Crew is worth what there paid,well over and above any other commercial carrier flying the world today.What do you get higher fares to make any profit if any margin.Really people just wake up..why fly to Asia as an Eg of QF unconfigered aircraft and pay the same fare and most all ways more than SQ/CX for there flat bed seats on routes they compete.
Sorry Robert you have lost me a bit ! I wasent talking about QF ? I'm saying it all airlines ! If you just walk in off the street ,and don't have the insight of this great forum , you get whacked ! Dosent matter what airline you use ! Lol!
For instance I like to fly one stop to Ireland from Mel and having retired I really have no schedule to adhere to within reason so I can play around with timings but in no case can I get the same good deal flying from Mel !
So one has to suck it up ! I does hurt though lol!

A lot of the price diference is made up of taxes ,airport terminal charges, wages relating to the country of origin of the flight and lastly demand and competition ,all of these can effect price .it has always been cheaper to buy the first leg of a business class ticket out of Australia to the UK on AU website then purchase the balance on the Hong Kong site etc etc remember not all airlines pay the same landing fees etc at airports as these are negotiated on a commercial market
