Yes you clear customs etc at LAX there are free trolleys and then up the ramp and drop your bags at the connection counter.

The Flight from LAX to JFK is classed as an international flight. you clear customs/pick up your bags and clear immigration at JFK

Incorrect.

You ALWAYS clear customs and immigration at your first point of arrival in the US. No difference for this situation.

Correct. Must clear customs at LAX.

I think jenko13 is correct.

From Qantas.com: "All Qantas customers arriving from Australia must clear customs and immigration in Los Angeles"

I did this flight in 2012 and went through immigration and customs in LAX.

I walk through the Qantas New York baggage drop bit once a week to get to the crew bus.

Basically as soon as your clear customs (after clearing immigration and collecting your baggage) at TBIT, after your flight from OZ, you walk to the end of the corridor, turn right, then follow that walkway down. Then you'll see a sign for the QF New York flight that will take you up the ramp. You can drop off your baggage and get direction from the groundcrew from there :)

I can confirm, once de-boarding you'll remain with all arriving passengers for immigration, baggage collection and customs. Once those are all cleared, you reach a main intersection where signage will indicate one direction for other terminals, and the other for TBIT exit etc. On the way up the ramp, you'll break off to the right and drop your bags at a dedicated transfer area. There's a bit of an adhoc multiple-airline checkin desk area, but you just hand your bag over to the staff at the baggage belt. From there, you'll go up a lift and into the main TBIT airline checkin area. Ignore all desks (assuming Qantas has provided you your onwards boarding passes ex-SYD) and head straight to security. From there you're an onwards passenger in TBIT free to use the lounges and main terminal.

Clear Customs at LAX, I am pretty sure you have to collect your bags but not sure if you have to check them in again?

Bags will be tagged through to JFK in SYD.  At LAX you just hand them over to the ground staff at the transfer area.

Hi, how long is the approximate wait in LAX when travelling on to JFK, and similarly when flying from JFK to Sydney via LAX? Thanks
