I am an Australian citizen flying to New York City via Vancouver with Air Canada. I have a 2 hour layover in Vancouver before a connecting flight to Newark. What can I expect to happen with US immigration procedures? Does it all happen in Newark or Vancouver?

When departing Vancouver for the USA you will go through US Customs immediately after going through security. So you will have entered the the United States before jumping on the plane. Quite convenient actually as when you arrive in the US you simply walk off and collect your baggage.

YVR is a pre clearance airport for airlines flying from Canada to the US.

If you google YVR US immigration pre clearance procedures, some info should come up.
