I see Atlanta had 100 million pax for 2015, staggering really, I looked around online but couldn't find any flights there out of Aus, does anyone know if anyone flies to Atlanta direct out of Aus ?

The longest revenue flight in the world is currently Sydney to Dallas. Atlanta would be an extra almost two hours or so on that. Not sure any aircraft currently has the range to make that commercially viable. And sitting in an economy seat for almost 18 hours isn't my idea of fun!

Currently these are the North American cities directly accesible from Australia:

Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Vancouver, Honalulu

I don't see that changing anytime soon.

ATL is Delta's 'home' hub .. and yes, SYD is served on DL metal. However, the quickest Delta SYD-ATL flight combo is a 21hr effort, with a stop and change of plane in LAX. Other connections on DL are available throughout their US network but all ex SYD flights stop in LAX.

As per the post above, QF does SYD-DFW non-stop and connections are available DFW-ATL.

But SYD-ATL non-stop = not currently possible.

And SYD-ATL direct = no, not on same plane, even with a stop in LAX.

On the other hand, AUS-ATL (Austin, TX to Atlanta, GA) has plenty of scope for non-stops and direct service.

It is Delta's main hub and there is a lot of regional service from there. The passenger numbers and flight movements would come from its hubbing role as opposed to O&D traffic... in perspective though, if we combined London's airports together and NYC's airports together, their figures would be higher.

No direct flights to Australia from Atlanta. Is probably techincally possible, but is there demand for it? Doubtful. 

Not sure I agree with @kimshep about Austin, TX? I could see United one day launching service from Sydney to their hub at Houston, but not sure about Austin. Will be interesting to see how NZ Houston services go.

Hutch .. wasn't suggesting that SYD-AUS ono-stop/direct would be possible, desirable or even imaginable.

GBRGB post asked specifically in the last sentence "does anyone know if anyone flies to Atlanta direct out of Aus ?"

Now, I had assumed that his post was about SYD/MEL/BNE flights to ATL, which is why I devoted most of my post to it. However, the last sentence of GBRGB's post is a bit vague - hence the reason why I covered BOTH AUS (as in Australia .. and as in AUS, Tx). Indeed, DL - along with many other carriers - offer a slew of domestic non-stops between AUS(tin) and ATL.

Most of the flights from ATL are domestic based. So despite the high number, you could say at least 90% of those numbers are domestic, and therefor, international number would be considered low
