I recently flew on the new A350 with Cathay and must say i was pretty dissapointed. For an aircraft that was only 9 months old, it was already falling apart. There were 2 business class seats that required the crew to work on for at least 20 mins to get them to retract, the lock on the toilet door was hanging off and the seat buttons felt like they were ready to fall off. It felt like everything airbus had learned about making aircraft had been forgotten and they were making aircraft to meet a cost target. Has anyone else had the same experience?

It's not Airbus, it's Zodiac, a fitout supplier used by Cathay and a few other airlines. Apparently Zodiac found themselves with too many A350 fitout orders to fill and did substandard work to meet the deadlines. Several airlines are affected. Cathay is making them fix it in the next few months.

yeah Zodiac have stuffed around american and united as well, apparently theres not enough competition in mass order airline seats market, only a few big players
To the OP: don't worry about their J seats anymore. As AusBT pointed out, the 3 A350s suffering from the problems the most will be retrofitted by July. CX has 13 A350s in its fleet, with 2 more that should arrive in May, so you were probably a bit unlucky to get one of the older planes. Most of CX's frequent fliers have noticed an improvement in the quality of J seats in the planes that have arrived in the past 6 months; so don't follow the advice of anyone who says that they'd rather take the A330s than the A350s because that's definitely no longer the case.

No. 777-300ER and A330 non-regional are definitely better in terms of design and legroom, now you need to open storage door in order to charge your electronics or plug headphone in.
(maybe I just love old Rockwell Collins 3D non-interactive map with bunch of watch and insurance ads?)
How is the design and legroom better? Seat pitch on the A350 is increased by 3 inches, and the old location of the power ports made it awkward to charge phones. The headphone jack was always inside the storage door as well. I personally think it makes it cleaner and theres less tangling of stupid wires.

The A350 J seats are clearly an upgrade on the A330. They're wider for a start. Storage is better. The IFE system is better.
