Having great difficulty getting decent connecting 1 stop flights from Mel to CLE in mid to late June.

This used to be a no brainer, can't seem to get Virgin to even offer the route, and Qantas sends you all over the place and even via Sydney too with 3 stops in each direction

Any ideas?

If you can't book directly through the airlines, or connections are poor, have a look at Skyscanner and take note of prices, connections and flight numbers. For example, I can see connections with United via LAX or Qantas via SYD and DFW.
You could book through Skyscanner, but I find service better elsewhere, just in case things go wrong (eg schedule change, flight cancellation).
So then go to your travel agent and ask for that itinerary to be booked- this is where knowing flight numbers comes in. You can get codeshare flights that are otherwise hidden.

Is it CLE that you're trying to get to or something near it? Some decent attractions around that airport are actually quicker to get to from other airports once you've taken connection time and similar into account.

If you're loyal to Virgin, Delta connect to CLE via MSP, DTW and ATL and I've found that codeshares are available all the way to CLE during my past trips there.

Expertflyer:

UA99 - MEL/LAX 0915h - 0635h

UA1919 - LAX/CLE 1210h - 1942h

Or oneworld option:

QF - MEL/SYD

QF 7 - SYD/DFW

AA2208 or AA1582 - DFW/CLE
