Does anyone else find it rather ridiculous that you will most likely (pending the new sabre system) earn more velocity points on Virgin if you stop over somewhere.

Or you could call and request that miles be credited as per the Original Routing, especially if it was the Airline that bumped you to a direct flight (as opposed to giving you a choice and you accepting the direct flight).

It isn't ridiculous! It's a bonus for business travellers!
