No because you have to clear customs in Sydney.

but you have to clear customs when going QF to QF international to domestic, and your bags can be checked through - since they are interline partners, wont they be able to check them to my final destination>??

They can check them through, but you still need to collect the bags Sydney international, clear customs, then take your bags to the bag drop before catching the bus to the domestic terminal. Right next to that bag drop is a check in counter where QF can check your bags to Adelaide. Its rarely very busy there so you maybe save 4 to 5 minutes by having a tag already on the bag.

Also AA has a policy against checking bags through on a separate booking from memory. not sure if that's changed recently but a few years back it needed to be on the same booking reference to be checked through.

You will definitely have to recheck your bags and get a new boarding pass in Australia.

AA will not check your bags through

Bags can be tagged through to domestic connections, but you will still have to collect the bags to go through customs and drop them off again with the connecting airline.

As for checking through across tickets, that's up to the airline that first checks you in.

oneworld used to require baggage check through across tickets between oneworld members. That was changed mid last year and each airline now has their own policy. CX and JL will, BA won't. QF and AA claim that they will in the event that one ticket is an award.

If it was Star Alliance, your bags could be checked through to final destination. I have just travelled on 3 seperate tickets, and my bags were checked on 6 flights with 6 Boarding passes issued at point of origin. Also, Canada now has a policy where if you land in your first Canadian city, your clear Immigration BUT no bags until you get home. A really fantastic policy and great improvement! Let's hope it is soon adopted by Australian Customs.

No - as mentioned above, standard (almost) universal rule is that baggage must be checked through at first city of arrival. Thus when we fly to US, bags are collected and checked by customs at LAX or DFW, and then handed across to handlers who then arrange for baggage to go to the onward flight - irrespective of airline.

Same thing here - on arrival in Sydney, reclaim baggage, check through customs, and then baggage handlers process onto the onward flight. Easy!!
