Can anybody tell me if I have royally effed up by transferring 67500 velocity points to Krisflyer, to get 50k points with them (for an unsuccessful business class upgrade) and no wanting to transfer them back to Velocity? The rate is the same the other way so I'm losing 30k velocity points?

Yes, the rate is 1.35:1 in each direction. So, you get 35% points less than you transfer both ways.
