I have platinum with Qantas at the moment but will not be able to reach 1200 status credits to retain platinum by the anniversary date. I do have a flight that spans the anniversary date though. While I won't be able to accrue enough status credits for the departing flight before the anniversary date, I will have enough on the return, which unfortunately is 10 days after the anniversary. I was wondering if anyone has experience with asking Qantas to make an exception in counting the status credits for the return flight towards retaining platinum since it is only over the anniversary by a few days?

I doubt it. The best you could probably hope for is for them to offer you to pay e.g. 100,000 points to retain Platinum. But they may not even do that.

How short will you be by the anniversary date?

I had a colleague with the same issue a few years ago - he sent them an email with upcoming trips shown & they extended it for him. He'd been Platinum for 4-5yrs at the time, so not sure if that was a factor or not.

Thanks for the helpful advice mviy and Greg84. Mviy, I'll be 105 status credits short by the anniversary date.

You can always ask, but don't be surprised if they offered you a cost in points to retain your status.

I don't see them adjusting to earn date as that is one thing they are pretty consistent on.

It’s up to you how much you value WP. Do you risk it and not do the flying or do you do a little extra flying to make up the difference?

Some indirect flying e.g. MEL-BNE-CNS can earn status credits at a cheaper rate.

The recent Double Status Credits promo would have been a good opportunity.

Some OneWorld partner airlines have routes you can fly that earn very well e.g. AA in the US. Obviously you’ve got to have some time on your hands overseas to be able to do that.

QF used to give some free comps but lately offering them at the price of some points is what has been happening.

I could recoup the points quickly through credit card churning so I’d probably spend the points to retain WP if I was offered, but others have decided that it’s not worth it to them.

We can pontificate on here all day, but when the rubber hits the road, the best and only thing to do is get on the horn with Qantas. Let us know how it goes.
