Does anyone know if VA offers early check in at HKG for their flight to MEL? I will arrive at 2.30pm on another flight (on a separate ticket) and the VA flight departs at 7.50pm. I'm VA Plat and traveling in J if that helps.

At a guess, I'd say no, purely because AFAIK they're currently only running one flight a day out of HK, so they won't have staff on the desk two hours before they need to, to check you in.

Could be wrong though.

I think you are correct Drake. Store your luggage and go for a wander around HKG for a couple of hours

Desks won't open until sometime after 4.30pm I've found. You could take the airport train into town and check-in at Kowloon or HKI stations on arrival. A same day return pass is priced as a one-way fare (around $18aud and cheaper online). Would give you a good couple hours to look around and not worry about luggage or boarding passes.

There are also luggage storage facilities around HKIA. Otherwise, by the time you're through arrivals it'll be a two hour wait.

Go to the transit area and see if the Hong Kong airlines/Virgin Australia counter can do it (the counter is located at either E1 or M1 according to the Hong Kong airport website). They should be able to retrieve your bag and retag it for you (you'll need to provide them with the receipt and possibly pay a small fee) and then check you in.

If they can't then you've lost nothing as you can just go through the arrivals path get your bag and re-check in upstairs when it opens a few hours later.

@jianga,

unfortunately you haven't specified where you're arriving into HKG from or what airline you will arrive on.

If the [unkn origin]-HKG sector is on a VA partner - or a carrier who VA has an interline agreement with - it may be possible for you to have your luggage checked all the way to MEL when you check-in at your originating point. If not, then follow the above advice offered by other posters.
