I'm sitting in Barcelona airport waiting for my flight back to Sydney. I'm currently several hundred euro lighter because it seems Malaysia Airlines no longer allows extra checked baggage weight based in Oneworld status. According to the Oneworld site, Emerald members should receive 15kg extra makingbthe alleged total for my fare 45kg. My total checked baggage weight was 41kg. Additionally, MAS no longer allow free seat selection either. Has anyone else experienced these issues or have I been dealing with incompetent staff?

Did you show the staff the OneWorld page outlining your benefits?

They use both BA and EK as options to get back onto MH flights, and that is probably where the issue lies - a codeshare...

BA is oneworld, so the rules apply for them too.

I did, but the woman wouldn't have it. She said that the MAS system didn't reflect the increased baggage allowance (she showed me the screen and she was right). My frequent flyer number and Oneworld status was both there.

As another interesting turn of events, at Heathrow I had trouble getting into the lounge. My QFF card scanned but didn't, the information she received didn't allow me in. Luckily this person was more pragmatic, she could see my card and went again the system and let me in.

Just all very strange!

Interestingly enough, during the booking I was able to book an exit row seat for free on the BA flight. I couldn't book any seat (even the basic seat) for free on MAS though. I wasn't too concerned because the same thing happen last month when I book Iberia from the US to Barcelona.

If your first flight was with BA, it sounds like BA took your money, not MAS.

BA use a piece based baggage system, and their check-in system (FLY) struggles to calculate excess correctly for weight based tickets (when a frequent flyer card is involved). Had it been piece based it would have not been an issue.

The agent in BCN should have waived the fee.

Write to BA and request a refund (not MAS as they did not process it).
