Etihad Airways has revealed its next generation of first class and business class suites designed for the new Airbus A321LR jets, which take wing from 1 August 2025 to destinations across Europe and Asia.

For Airbus, that LR suffix means ‘long range’.

But to the Gulf airline it’s Luxury Redefined, and will bring “Etihad’s signature luxury and a true first class experience to narrowbody flying.”

“Luxury is something that’s been in our DNA for such a long time,” says Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves, citing the first class Apartments and three-room Residence of the Etihad A380 superjumbo.

“We've taken the luxury experience which we are famed for on our widebody fleet and adapted it to offer guests the same experience in a single-aisle aircraft.”

Launched at this week’s Arabian Travel Market event in Dubai, Etihad’s A321LR is crowned by 16 premium flatbed seats based on the Opera platform from Airbus’ seating arm Stelia Aerospace, with a 1-1 layout for direct aisle access.

Etihad A321LR first class

Taking pride of place in row 1 are two private Etihad A321LR first class suites – one on each side of the aisle – with a sliding door, where Etihad says passengers can anticipate “elevated dining”.

Each suite offers additional space for a companion to sit and share a drink, as well as a large 20” 4K screen for entertainment, with Bluetooth pairing and wireless charging.

“If you come on board our A321LR, you’re going to have the same first class amenities, Armani Casa in-flight dining, and all the bespoke service that people expect” in first class on an Etihad A380, Neves said.

Etihad says its A321LR first class experience will be on a par with the A380.

“So whether you’re going on your 14-hour flight to Toronto, a four-hour flight to Calcutta or a two and a half hour flight to Riyadh, you’re going to get that same first class experience all the way through.”

And how much will Etihad charge for the A321LR’s first class over business class?

Looking at fares already on sale for Abu Dhabi to Zurich in mid-November, one-way A321LR first class tickets are listed at AED22,460 (USD6,115) – a hefty 35% premium over the A321LR business class fares which begin at AED16,360 (USD4,455).

Etihad’s A321LR business class foregoes the sliding door of first class to become open mini-suites.

There are 14 business class suites in the A321XLR, making a total of 16 premium seats when first class is counted.

But businesss class doesn’t cut back on other key features such as a 78” beds or a 17.3” 4K screen with Bluetooth headphone pairing.

As for economy, there are 144 seats in a standard 3-3 configuration; each is 18.4" wide and sports a 5" recline, while seats in the ‘economy plus’ rows have a 35" pitch.

Where Etihad will fly the A321LR

Etihad expects to see ten of its 20 Airbus A321LRs join the fleet this year, “and then we are going to get ten more the following year,” Neves says.

The long-range jets boast a 50% greater range than Etihad’s fleet of 30 conventional A320-series planes.

The following cities have already been earmarked for Etihad A321LR flights from Abu Dhabi: Algiers, Athens, Bangkok, Chennai, Chiang Mai, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Kolkata, Krabi, Medan, Milan, Phnom Penh, Phuket, Riyadh, Tunis, and Zurich.

In some instances the A321LR will carve out new premium routes which don’t have the passenger traffic to supper a larger twin-aisle jet such as the Airbus A350 or Boeing 787.

There will also be cases where the A321LR will slot in alongside a larger jet, or convert a seasonal service into a year-round route.

“The strategic intent for them is frequency and thinner markets,” Neves explains.

“If I went to Copenhagen twice a day with a wide-body aircraft, I would lose a lot of money. But it will eventually work if I can deploy an A321LR to Copenhagen.”

“Or I can fly seven days a week to Nice with that plane. But I cannot send a Boeing 777 seven days a week to Nice.”

“I’m a big believer in frequency,” Neves adds. “I hate to fly three times a week to a certain destination. I like consistency. So I like to fly everywhere throughout the year at least daily. The A321LR helps with this.”

All Ways Good, Always Etihad.  I'm just not sold on the A321LR after taking a spin on 2 of them over the Easter break.

Looks great in all classes, although I don't know how crew can prepare plated meals in that tiny forward A321 galley, especially First Class standard food.

Great to see Etihad growing again and giving QR and EK a run for their money. I just wish they joined an alliance because superb product isn't enough for a hub airline like Etihad when you have QR (oneworld) and TK (Star Alliance) with similar networks almost next door.

Having "First Class" in what is a Business Plus first row seems ambitious.  On an A321LR they would be better just running Business and Coach.

Not a huge fan of the chair being next to the aisle but it's still very nice. I I love the solid looking cabin divider at the rear of the forward cabin. Makes Qantas' choice of seating in their new A321s look even more miserly.
