Qatar Airways launches 'fully vegan' business class à la carte menu

Vegans and vegetarians have become accustomed to getting the short end of the (gluten-free?) breadstick from many airlines.

Some – especially in Asia and the middle east – are better than others when catering for non-carnivores, and the gap continues to close: even Singapore Airlines is now offering a vegan version of its signature satay sticks, using plant-based Impossible Meat.

Qatar Airways has now taken a confident culinary stride forward with the launch of 'fully vegan' à la carte menu in business class.

Dishes on offer include smoked moutabel, spiral courgettes and arrabbiata sauce, tofu and spinach tortellini, asian barbecue tofu, noodles, scallions and shiitake, fried tofu with vegetable tajine, cauliflower couscous and kalamata bruschetta, and chickpea flour omelette.

However, the airline says this isn't just for vegans – the move is designed to cater to increasing demand for plant-based food.

"We always strive to provide our customers with authentic and indulgent experiences in the skies," says Qatar Airways Group CEO His Excellency Akbar Al Baker.

"We are delighted to incorporate a vegan main course choice to our on-board menu, offering our passengers yet another lifestyle choice that redefines the expectations from a five-star airline."

Qatar Airways' vegan business class menu is available on all flights from the airline's hub at Doha's Hamad International Airport, and selected flights into Doha.

Yes! This is great to hear so thanks for reporting David! This could even swing me from my Emirates booking next year.  Being aware of what you consume, the agricultural industry atrocity and the benefits of a plant based vegan lifestyle, this move by Qatar certainly looks to Wow so love to see a review by anyone flying soon.

How so? A (presumed) meat eater saying they're not interested in a vegan menu is no different to a vegan saying they're not interested in a beef menu, so the same comment could be made in reverse: but, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and to eat what they choose.

You miss the point. Plant based food isn't necessarily a vegan imitation of real food, like the Impossible Burger™ for example. Sure those timmitations exist, but people who eat plant based food for health/nutrition reasons, know that those imitation meats are not particularly good for you. Remember though, according to the World Health Organisation, processed meats, like sausages and bacon are considered Class ONE carcinogens. ie, just as cancer causing as cigarettes. Then again, alcohol is a carcinogen too, and I drink alcohol, so I'm not claiming to be perfect. Just remember when you tuck into your bacon and eggs or sausages or salami  - it's giving you cancer.

no, vegan is not a marketing term. it's actually far more comprehensive than not eating animals. it's just that "vegan" appears to have become a  short cut for "follows a fully plant based diet". Vegans oppose the use/exploitation of animals in all ways:  for food, testing cosmetics, leather for clothes etc etc.

Vegans also follow a plant based diet - meaning they get all their nutrition from plants, like many animals do, other great apes, elephants, giraffes etc etc. It's a diet consistent with good health and the lowest chance of having obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease etc.  It's the diet followed by a lot of elite athletes like Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Lewis Hamilton and there are many others.

People who don't eat animal products are often at a loss when flying, since even the vegetarian option often contains dairy or eggs. 

This is a great move by Qatar, since a "vegan" meal is also suitable for vegetarians.

The additional non-health benefits of a plant based diet is that it's best in terms of minimising harm to the environment, and also of course, the animals.

but if you don't test on animals, you have to test on humans !!!

You can still have a very good diet & not be vege, plus you miss out on some nutrients being vege.

Not sure that any athletes are vege. Not sure they can be & still perform.

Not quite. I was explaining re the difference between vegan and vegetarian for a start. Then I was spruiking a plant based diet a little. The things I write are correct. I have a fair amount of expertise in this area - I'm a doctor with an interest in plant-based nutrition. Those sports people I listed ARE plant based. There are many others, including gold medal winning cyclists.  You could check the movie called "The Game Changers" on Netflix which explains how performance and recovery times improve with a plant based diet. The only nutrient you absolutely must supplement if you are fully plant based and do not eat any fortified foods is Vit B12. (The B12 meat eaters get from steak, has been added to the feed which the cows eat. B12 is made by bacteria, not mammals.)  The government  of Canada recently removed dairy from it's food pyramid because it is not essential to good health and is probably harmful. They didn't do that without evidence - and faced huge (dairy)  industry pressure not to.You could also check out nutritionfacts.org, an evidence based (not for profit ) website with actual evidence (with studies etc) about the benefits of a plant based diet.

 Sometimes the things you've been believed your whole life are just not true. 

anyhow, I'm just trying to present some facts in a non judgey way. I didn't know a lot of this stuff even 2 years ago. I'm 51. I wish I'd moved to a plant based diet earlier.

I have been vegetarian all my life - and I have also flown since a very young age - Vegetarian meals on flights usually ranged from strange and inedible to passable. It has improved, although, fften not much has changed. 

Even in VA or QANTAS the vegetarian options are limited, poor, or sometimes unavailable. 

This is a great development for QATAR, alas, I would rather see airlines in general improve (or in some cases offer) a quality vegetarian option/s.

Would it be fair to say that as a vegetarian, if you were offered a great looking tasty dish that happens also to be vegan you'd be happy? Since fully plant-based food, is a subset of vegetarian just without the eggs/dairy/honey etc, you'd be fine with that?
