Qantas Next Generation Check-in starts November 10

From November 10, Sydney business travellers will have access to a new check-in system from Qantas, designed to reduce queue times for domestic flights.

The Qantas Q Card has been running in Perth since July of this year, and is designed to quickly identify and check-in passengers.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce claims the new system will “dramatically reduce domestic check-in times for customers, allowing them to move through the check-in area with speed and ease.”

A check-in kiosk will be located at the Sydney T3 domestic terminal, where the Q card can be scanned. An SMS message will then be sent with flight information.

Also set to save time is the Q Bag Tag, which will remove the need for paper tags and allow passengers to quickly drop their luggage off.

Qantas says the Q Bag Tag will be useable at all domestic airports “within the coming months”, completely removing the need for paper tags on domestic flights.

Passengers are recommended to check-in online or via their mobile phone before getting to the airport. They’ll then be able to head straight to the Bag Drop point.

Platinum, Gold and Silver Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members will be sent new Qantas cards and bag tags in the coming months.

The rollout of the system will continue with Melbourne Airport being upgraded during the summer of 2011 and Brisbane in Autumn. Adelaide and Canberra will be the last to have the system implemented in the coming winter.
