How to buy Virgin Australia Velocity frequent flyer points online

Don't have quite enough Virgin Australia Velocity points to claim that business class upgrade or a free flight with Virgin or partner airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Etihad?

Virgin's Points Booster program lets you top up your account, and it's now available online, whereas you previously had to buy those extra points over the phone.

You can scoop up as many as 50,000 points for the sum of $1,172, although the actual purchase is limited to 50% of your current points balance – so if you're sitting on 70,000 points then your purchase will be capped at 35,000 points, which costs $894.

Points are sold in in blocks of 500 and be purchased twice each calendar year.

Here's the full Points Booster pricing chart (click on the image for a larger reading-friendly view):

How to buy Velocity frequent flyer points online

1. Click through to velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Redeem/points-booster (you may need to log in  with your Velocity account details).

2. Before you can buy those points you'll need to specify how you want to use them. This doesn't alter the number of points you can purchase, nor does it change their price.

3. Having chosen how you want to use those points, now it's time to specify how many points you want to buy: the drop-down list will be capped at half of your current points balance. The Velocity account in this example is sitting at 43,146 points so the purchase will be capped at 22,000 points.

We suggest that before you dive in, consider taking advantage of Velocity schemes such as transfers and family pooling to maximise the number of points in your account.

These morons just cant help continuing the devaluation of the program be it pilot gold or purchasing points, they are really showing their true colors - a budget airline trying to act like a full service carrier.

They have just made a couple of changes to the booster program. Firstly, made it possible to buy the points online, and secondly changed the limits to the points you can buy.

Qantas run a very similar top up point purchase program.

Is there a limit to the number that can be purchased per year?
