Travel tip: snap a smartphone picture of your hotel room number

TRAVEL TIP | Ever got in the hotel lift in the middle of a long business trip and realised you don't remember which floor your room's on?

Or ended up standing in a hotel corridor, trying to remember if your room is 424, 422, 442 or something entirely different?

Try snapping a quick picture of the room number with your iPhone, Android device or BlackBerry as soon as you've dropped your bags.

It's a better solution than carrying the card in its little paper wallet with the room number on, since if that falls out of your pocket then your room's wide open to anyone.

Snapping a picture with your phone is quick, it's easy and it avoids those awkward moments when you're tired, jetlagged and staring at the floor numbers in a lift full of people.

Not to mention those even more awkward moments when you realise you're trying to get into someone else's hotel room.

It's also useful in case you leave anything behind in the room when you leave.

No more trying to remember which room you were in on Sunday in Singapore or Wednesday in Wellington if you've left your washbag or mobile phone charger behind.

What I do is dial the number and hang up straight away. That way it is in my most recently dialed list.

That's a better idea!

All well and good until you lose your phone in the back of taxi :)

I still prefer keeping the hotel's business card in one of my pockets.

Use a free iPhone app called Room. It puts your room# on a little door and on the icon front and you can save further info.

I'm with fxdxdy.  I heard the tip on the Travel Commons podcast (https://travelcommons.com/) last year and it's just so simple
