My first commercial flight was on a DC3 and it was only about 10 years later that I first flew on the Qantas '747B' as Qantas called it – what a contrast! I have very fond memories of those early 747s which (when first introduced) had generous leg room in Economy (more than the 707s of the time)...

Hahaha, that ain't going to happen. Gave up on Qantas a long time ago (cramped economy seating and so-so service) and haven't looked back.

I want to visit the Qantas museum in Longreach. Last time I looked, Brisbane to Longreach was 12,000 points O/W, and Sydney to Longreach (via Brisbane) the same (plus a different cash co-payment, obviously). I don't know if that makes Sydney-Longreach a bargain on points, but I think it's good va...

One of my early long haul flights was on a QF 747.200 student charter from Sydney to London, sometime in the 1970s. We had the run of the entire aircraft including the Captain Cook lounge, and arranging to sit for a while in the flight deck and chat to the captain wasn't a problem. Can't imagine ...

I flew with TG on an A340-500 when they flew LAX-BKK non-stop, a similar distance to PER-LHR. Thai's seat pitch in Y for those flights was 36" and in PE, which I flew, 42". It was more than bearable -- although Thai lost money on each and every flight, hence the reason the non-stops ceased....

I'd definitely consider the 7 day JR pass already mentioned. The cost works out more or less the same as a return Tokyo-Osaka ticket so all other JR travel on that pass, including the JR train between Narita and Tokyo, is a bonus, as long as it's within the 7 days. It can be great value, but you ...

I had Jetstar cancel a Melbourne-Newcastle flight after I had gone to the airport and checked in - about half an hour before boarding time, from memory. It was late in the evening and my only choice was to rebook on QF's last flight of the day to Sydney and get a rental car from there (I snared ...

Great to know the "behind the scenes" aspects! My solution is simple -- I won't visit Qantas front of house in the cheap seats, and I don't fly on airlines with 3-3-3 on their 787s (tried it once). Which means I don't fly many 787s at all, but am looking forward to travelling on JAL to Japan -- 2...

Well, I used points to go F Mel-LAX a few years back and it was sensational value. The lounge in Melbourne is fabulous, on the plane you're at the front in your own little bubble, and it's great to be able to order a snack when a crew member asks you at 2 am if there's something they can get you....

I used this service extensively (and the connecting Xplorer service) when a relative in the Hunter Valley had a long period of sickness. When the XPT service works well, as it sounds like it did for you, it's brilliant. My overall experience is a bit different: some day-sitter carriages...
