Depends when your flight is... if early morning I'd be going for the Rydges.

not sure if it is impacting the 'guest experience', but there is a large construction project of apartment blocks in progress (southbankwollicreek.com.au) next to the Mercure Hotel, and from what I can see, rooms facing away from the airport currently overlook the construction site. I attatch a pic taken today to give an idea, and eventually the Mecure will undergo a facelift to incorperate it into this new 'precinct'

I like Rydges, its not too fancy if you're used to 5 star hotels, but its all you need for an overnight. The view over the tarmac is fantastic.

Closest to International.

The Mrcure Sydney Airport (international side) is dated, and it does take longer to walk from there to the international terminal.

Its also not on any bus or train route from domestic.

But the Rydges, while I have not stayed there, would be the best, as its on the train route, $5.50 or is it still $5 for domestic to international terminal transfer by train, or about $2.60 or so by the route 400 bus.

If you want cheap, the Ibis Budget at domestic, then call for a taxi early in the next morning, is the cheapest, this one, I have used as well.  One good thing about the Ibis Budget is that they don't take a credit card surcharge, the others will take $50 or $100 and can take days to refund if you give your credit card, and some have the gall to say they don't want cash deposit for incidentals.

I stayed at the Rydges a few months ago (with a tarmac view) and they had a free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal, so there is no need to catch a train or bus.
