Hi All,

I know that Qantas has many 787's on order, but since they have been announcing a fair bit of point-to-point destinations like MEL-NRT, I was wondering if you guys think there's any chance of them leasing additional 330's to open up routes to Korea, Taiwan or add additional capacity to Singapore, China or Japan? The A330's seem to work really well on Asian routes.

Unlikely I suspect.

QF will take more 787s eventually and also order 777X/350 in the next couple of years I suspect.
Having just been refurbed (well 16of18) the 330s will be around for a while yet.

QF generally get brand new aircraft and look after them well (apart from the F100s and 717s). Experience with widebody 2nd hand (eg the 3 767 ugly sisters from BA) hasn't been great.

I thought "the ugly sisters" we're the 2 747-400s that came from Malaysian.  QF has been working to reduce fleet variants, so would not be a hurry to add A330s that are not consistent with the refurbed fleet.

There's a bigger story to this as at the time Qantas took a lot of ex-BA 767's and some 747's from Malay (and Asiana I think).

This thread goes into great detail about the back story - http://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=414491

QF has actually reduced it's A330 fleet size by a couple. So don't see them going the other way. It appears the current plan will be that some 787 will eventually replace A330 on Asian routes down the track... leaving QF with 787/A380 and whatever plane QF orders for ultra long range

They reduced the A330 fleet from 30 to 28 during the shuffle of A330s back from JQ. Some people have been claiming that the last 2 332s not yet refit won't be and will be returned, reducing the fleet to 26.

The A330s and A380s have 10-15ish years left.
The 744ERs have 5-8 years left.

I would expect to see an order for more 787s and either A350s or 777-8s within the next 12-18 months.
I don't see them making any more long term leases (other then QF leasing to itself via shell companies much like many of their already owned aircraft)
Short term leases might be possible, depending on how they manage the arrival of the 787s vs retiring older 747s and any refresh to the 380s.

they wont be flying to korea or taiwan as the markets are either too competitive or too small. id like to see them increase China flights with 788s taken off jetstar as their international operations are closed down
