Hi - I''m lacking mobility at the moment so only wanted to make one stop (I know they're near each other!) - I usually use the Qantas lounge in Melbourne but am flying Cathay this trip. Which lounge is better? I find the Qantas one quite depressing, but given they are close - maybe it's not dissimilar? Cheers.

One of the few instances where the QF business lounge wins the day!

Only due to size mind you.

As you've said, the Qantas business bunker, I mean lounge, is really dissapointing.
I reckon give Cathay a go. I haven't used it myself but from the photos I've seen it does look better.

I'm hoping that one day soon, here on ausbt, we'll see an announcement from Qantas stating they are overhauling their lounge in Melbourne and are installing something much more befitting their new 787 service.

I used Qantas international lounge in MEL and honestly I do not like to go there anymore - Sydney domestic lounge is by far better. This time I will try Cathay to have my own opinion. But generally speaking one would expect that lounges in Melbourne are sub-par considering the fact that only Kiwis transiting via Melbourne.

Checked - while QF lounge in MEL is nothing impressive, CX somewhat depressing. Go to QF if you after lounge.

Kdunton: the Qantas lounge is admittedly a bit of a bunker, although you're not really going there for the view... food and drinks are decent, unsure how it compares with the Cathay lounge sorry!

MEL CX lounge is not all that flash. My tip: Don't arrive at the airport too early.

Good advice TheRealBabushka - alas too late! I can confirm that the CX lounge is worse than the QF lounge - size, food etc. Back to the QF bunker next time and fingers crossed for an upgrade to the lounge one day sooon. Cheers

Yes, I found oneworld lounge option to be crappy at best, even the Qantas First Lounge (way worse than SYD one).

The things to do: There's a coffee bar called Little Ludlow after security, go there, buy a cup of coffee and enjoy tarmac view there (If your flight departing night, go to Hudsons Coffee, buy a cup of coffee and enjoy tarmac view there)

Summary: Don't bother with lounge and I agree with TheRealBabushka, don't go to airport early.

Actually I prefer the QF First MEL lounge. A lot more cosy than the SYD version. But if more people feel this way, then its even better as the MEL First lounge won't be too crowded!

Does anyone know, what's going to happen to the space next to MEL First vacated by EK? Seems like a waste if QF didn't move the Business lounge out of the dungeon and into that space.

The Qantas lounge is not great but better than the Cathay lounge. It has a better choice of food and drink and a proper coffee machine. The Cathay lounge does have good dim sum and a bit more natural light, also if you are flying Cathay they call your flight. So I often go and have a meal at the Qantas lounge and then head over to the Cathay lounge to do a little work before boarding.

But if you can only go to one, definitely Qantas.
