Why would Qatar not fly Doha to Canberra to Sydney instead of Doha to Sydney to Canberra?

As Singapore Airlines loads to CBR suggests, Qatar knows that it'll have trouble filling up the aircraft. As such, it is being announced as a tag for the second daily SYD flight. That being said, the A350 is a superb aircraft, they got that going for them.

I am meaning the order of ports, why not Canberra first from Doha then onto Sydney?

Presumably because most people will get off in SYD. Going via CBR would be massively inconvenient to them. Perhaps they're going to aim for the ability to sell the domestic leg only but I doubt that would be allowed!

There is nothing wrong with the SQ CBR loads, at least not SIN bound.


My understanding of the intention of the 'Regional Package', which enables airlines to fly extra services into the Big 4 air markets above their current bilateral arrangements, is that they can operate triangular routes without impacting on their capacity restrictions. This is to encourage them to fly to smaller airports and provide an economic boost to regions. 


Qatar could operate SYD-CBR-DOH or DOH-CBR-SYD (or a mixture), but I can't see the Government allowing them to do DOH-SYD-CBR-SYD-DOH in addition to their current rights. Of course, Australia could provide Qatar additional rights and i'm sure it'll happen at some point. I wouldn't be surprised if CBR route is being used as some bargaining tool by QR behind the scenes.

If QR go down this road, I'd expect them to alternate between CBR and SYD going first, as it will allow them to effectively increase non-stop return flights to SYD by around 3 per week.


But a lot may change in the next 12 months... may not even see the Orxy in Canberra ever.

The current Qatar-Australia air service agreement allows 21 flights/week between DOH and SYD/MEL/BNE/PER (all used), another 7 provided the flight is to/via another port in Australia, and unlimited to Australian ports other then SYD/MEL/BNE/PER.

Watched interview with Qatar airways  CEO on al jazeera newsthis week. Said that due to ban by other middle eastern countries  would be advancing plans for 24 new destinations. Has many spare aircraft now. Particularly  mentioned services  to Australian  and NZ ports.
