Canberra could get its first Hilton Hotel as part of a $200 million development which would also incorporate an international hotel school and a World Technology and Trade Centre. Plans for the five-star property include 253 rooms – among them 18 suites – plus the obligatory mix of restaurants and bars, a fitness centre, swimming pool and spa plus space for meetings and events.
The Hilton Canberra would be located in the capital's City Hill precinct, considered the municipal as well as geographical heart of Canberra.
"Canberra is an extremely important market, and Hilton would be honoured to have the opportunity to be able to offer our world-renowned Hilton hospitality to travellers visiting our nation’s capital," observes Rob Scullin, Hilton's Vice President of Development, Australasia.
Hilton has joined Ledrae Hotels – which is also working on developing the forthcoming Hilton Parramatta, due to open in 2022 – and design firm M20 in the ambitious pitch, which is now being assessed by the Australian Capital Territory government.
“We are excited to bring such an iconic brand such as Hilton to our nation capital," adds Michael Kyriacou, Director of Ledrae Hotels.
"The hotel will be a significant asset to the city, capitalising on the enormous growth in tourism – particularly the outbound tourism market and will help ACT compete with other global cities for major international conferences and events."
Also on Hilton's Australian map is the very upscale Hilton Melbourne Square, due to open in 2023 at Southbank's six-tower Melbourne Square development. The 600-room property will mark the brand's return to Melbourne, and won't be too far from the hotel group's former South Wharf site, which in July 2017 was rebranded as the Pan Pacific Melbourne.
