Hong Kong airport already boasts a solid selection of lounges, especially within the Oneworld alliance (thanks to solid entries by Cathay Pacific and Qantas), while the American Express Centurion Lounge taps into the top end of the airline-independent market.

Then there’s the chic Intervals cocktail bar atop the soaring Sky Bridge, and the very exclusive VIP Lounge for those who want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the terminal altogether. Cathay Pacific is also scoping out new lounges once the airport completes redevelopment of Terminal 2.

But there’s always room for one more lounge – or at least that’s the thinking behind Kyra, “an exclusive lounge destination” now open by Gate 23, in the space where Cathay’s The Cabin lounge once stood.

“Building on the success of Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club at HKIA, Kyra is the perfect addition to our ever-growing portfolio” says Errol McGlothan, regional president for Airport Dimensions – one of the firms behind Kyra Lounge, and itself an arm of Collinson Group, which in turn runs the Priority Pass program.

“We believe that time spent at an airport should be more than just a necessary step in getting to your destination; it should be a relaxing and enriching part of your journey.”

With space for over 150 travellers, the Kyra Lounge is bathed in the natural light flowing in through floor-to-ceiling windows.

The premium food and beverage menu spans from classic Chinese congee and delicious Cantonese dim sum like BBQ Char Sui buns, to iconic Hong Kong street food favourites like Fish Siu Mai and Traditional Curry Fishballs.

There’s also a host of Western-inspired dishes from the indulgent comfort of macaroni and cheese to a light couscous salad.

The bar offers a range of premium beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks, along with a trio of cocktails and mocktails – our pick would be the Fragrant Harbour blend of gin, blue curacao, lychee liquor and elderflower liqueur.

If work calls, pop into the sound-proof Zoom booth, hunker down at one of the modern workstations or take your laptop to the quieter corner of the lounge.

Long-time Cathay Pacific flyers will recall how The Cabin could get so warm in the afternoons that it was sometimes dubbed The Sauna; Airport Dimensions and design firm Studio 5 International have added ‘solar fins’ to the windows to help regulate temperature within the lounge.

The airline-independent Kyra Lounge is part of the Priority Pass and LoungeKey networks, while also offering paid access at USD$80 (HKD$625) when pre-booked online.

From the description “the central concourse of Terminal 1”, it is very likely to be taking over the previous space of Hongkong Airlines’ Club Bauhinia (near gate 23) as the airlines now only list Club Autus at Midfield Concourse as its only lounge. The cover photo of the Kyra Lounge provided also give clue that it will be a low ceiling space, matching the previous Club Bauhinia low ceiling space, which is in the arrival level of the central concourse. Of course the photo alone would have ruled out the previous location Thai Lounge at the upper floor of departure level of West Hall with airport high ceilings.
