Marriott's hipster hotel brand Moxy will plant its on-trend sneakers at Sydney Airport in early 2023, adding a dose of funky to the pre-flight experience.

While its location on Baxter Road will place the Moxy Sydney Airport closest to the domestic terminals and private aviation precinct, Marriott expects the proximity to the T1 international terminal will also appeal to local corporate and transient travel demand.

The new-build hotel will comprise 301 "cosy and stylish guest rooms", while the lively Moxy Bar will double as the front desk – an approach being adopted by several hotel brands as they chase the millennials market.

Marriott promises the Moxy Sydney Airport "will offer a café with an industrial vibe as well as all-day access to a delicious food menu" while "guests can meet and work in the various meeting and event spaces, workout in the fitness centre and use the guest laundry facilities."

"The scale of this project, and its prominent location at the entrance to Sydney Airport is set to position the hotel as an icon for the Moxy brand in Asia Pacific" says Richard Crawford, Marriott International's Senior Director, Hotel Development Australia, New Zealand and Pacific.

This will be Moxy's fifth shingle in the Australia-New Zealand region. The Moxy Melbourne will make its debut at South Yarra in 2022, closely followed by the Moxy Auckland.

Marriott describes Moxy as "a playful, affordable, and stylish hotel brand designed to give guests everything they want and nothing they don't. The animated brand combines stylish, industrial design and sociable service at an affordable price point."

It's not a bad location - I've often walked to the Quest and the Pullman from T3. Not sure the "Hipster" focus would suit my travel needs.

Has ET done any reviews of existing Moxy hotels?

I stayed in the Moxy in Glasgow and really enjoyed my stay... was a small but very comfortable and functional room at a great price.  It didn't strike me as "hipster", more "luxe backpacker" or "millennial".  Not sure it would be appropriate for the travelling professional as there was no desk etc but that could be different at the Sydney location.
