Fitness junkies, take note: you can now squeeze in a deadlift before your departure.

Global gym chain Anytime Fitness is opening its newest club at Sydney Airport’s T1 international terminal.

Located on the ground floor of the terminal, well before security and immigration, you can expect a fully-equipped gym with all the core kit – not just a pared-back ‘fitness studio’ – and yes, of course there are showers.

It’s a smart way to make use of all that spare time between arriving at the airport and heading to the departure gate.

You can swap the sitting-and-eating lounge experience for a shot of feel-good endorphins and get your activity levels up ahead of a sedentary long-haul flight.

The chain is also hoping to sign up many airline workers and airport staff at discounted VIP Foundation Membership rates.

While we don’t know exactly what those rates will be, Anytime Fitness generally charges $60-$100 per month depending on which particular gym you join.

However, members of any gym can access most other gyms in the Anytime Fitness network, which now spans some 600 franchises in Australia and more than 5,500 worldwide.

Gail Taylor, General Manager for Retail at Sydney Airport, said the arrival of Anytime Fitness “adds an exciting new dimension” to the airport’s passenger offering “as we continue to evolve the airport experience beyond traditional retail.”

“It responds to the growing demand for flexible, lifestyle-focused services and gives passengers and staff the opportunity to prioritise their wellbeing, no matter how busy their schedule.”

Industry reports put the number of Australians holding some form of gym or fitness studio membership at between 20-30%, although it’s estimate as many as half of those actually attend a gym once a week or less.

Hopefully they have a shower there too and make it mandatory to have one before getting on the plane if you use the equipment, but I doubt it.  Too many people stinking out the plane already, we don't need more.

The gym has showers, it's clearly stated in the article. But they can't "force" people to shower after using the gym. Do you seriously think this is legally possible?

This.  I doubt it.  But clearly some haven't been on planes where personal hygiene and "deodorant" isn't a widely used thing amongst those same people who are flying.

I think it's a good idea, but much like Changi's pool, how many people have the right kit in their hand baggage to take advantage of it? I wonder if the real market is airport workers, not passengers.

Airport workers are definitely a big market here although I think people would prefer to use a gym closer to their home and not be working out with colleagues? Anyway, any traveller who wants to use the gym is going to be bringing their gym kit in their cabin bag to take advantage of it. I would probably turn up wearing my gym gear, work out, hit the shower and then change into 'smart casual' I packed in the cabin bag for flying. I would even consider wearing the gym gear into the Qantas First Lounge and having a nice relaxed shower there, but I reckon that would cause a melt-down in the comments here LOL

I think they might deny entry in gym gear 😊

Doesn't that mean though that you just have damp and smelly gear stewing in your bag for the next 12 or so hours? Genuine question. I would love to use the pool on a Changi layover but just no idea what to do with wet swimwear after.

Just bring along a very good, almost 'airtight' plastic bag or plastic sleeve, sort of like a packing cube but not mesh, solid plastic with no scope for air to 'leak' out. If you're at an airport lounge with showers, give your gear a quick rinse out in the sink to get rid of the more obvious 'smell' and then wring them out to remove excess moisture, roll them up in a nice thick dry towel and do a press-roll-press-roll-press so the towel soaks up more excess moisture. Your gear will still come out a bit damp but nowhere near as wet and not as smelly. If you have any of those scented dryer sheets in your laundry, chuck one or two of those in the plastic bag to help with odor. Squash the plastic down nice and tight (sit on it!) to compress it so it takes up almost no space in your carry-on bag.
