Singapore Airlines adds A380 to Singapore-Japan-US

Singapore Airlines will introduce its highly-regarded Airbus A380 onto the Singapore-Japan-US route next year, flying via Narita to Los Angeles (LAX).

As of March 27, the SQ11 and SQ12 flights – said to be among SQ’s most profitable services – will be upgraded from the current Boeing 747-400 to the A380 superjumbo. This is Singapore’s first transpacific A380 service, and only the second after Qantas.

Singapore Airlines was recently voted the world’s best carrier for both premium and economy passengers in the Zagat 2010 travel survey and the A380 will allow passengers at the pointy end of the flights to enjoy for the private Suites in first class.

These sumptuous cabins sport a wall-mounted 23 inch video screen and serve meals designed by the airline's culinary panel which includes Matt Moran, Gordon Ramsay, Singapore's Sam Leong and French masterchef Georges Blanc.

Business class passengers will score extra-wide fully lie-flat beds in a spacious 1-2-1 layout rather than the 747’s angled beds in the more cramped 2-3-2 config.

The A380 service represents a big win for anyone on a Star Alliance round-the-world ticket, although more so if you’re eastbound – as the return SQ12 flight arrives in Singapore at the ungodly hour of 3:10am!

The Singapore-US route is also tipped to receive SQ's rumoured A380 reconfiguration for all new superjumbos delivered past May 2011, which is reported to extend the business class cabin to run the entire length of the upper deck.
