Singapore Airlines will chase an even greater share of the Australian market this year through its joint venture with Lufthansa and Swiss, which is intended to offer more flexible flight times and better connections on key European routes.

The three Star Alliance members hope to adjust their schedules for flights between their respective hubs of Singapore, Frankfurt and Zurich, pending regulatory approval, for a more even spread of arrivals and departures.

The airlines will also work to strengthen their appeal to corporate customers.

"We are very excited about what we can do together" Singapore Airlines Regional Vice-President for South West Pacific, Mr TK Tan, tells Australian Business Traveller.

"Sometimes if you arrive in Frankfurt 10 minutes earlier you will get a lot more European connections" Tan explains, "so if we can have a bigger spread we can improve connectivity for passengers."

Lufthansa axed its flights to Australia in March 1995 but still retains a small slice of the action through its flights out of Singapore to Frankfurt, while partner Swiss wings its way to Zurich.

"We have the three best hubs in Europe for Singapore Airlines – Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich" adds Lufthansa Chairman and CEO Carsten Spohr, "so we can feed them to and from smaller European destinations, and Singapore Airlines will feed us from Australasia."

Singapore Airlines also lists twice-daily flights to Frankfurt plus daily services to Zurich, Munich and, from mid-2016, Düsseldorf on its new Airbus A350.
