They often walk through the departure gates with a set of baggage scales on a trolley to weigh bags. On departure from Tasmanian airports they insist carry on bags be weighed to ensure they comply. For the comfort and safety of your fellow travelers, just comply with the terms and conditions of your booking. It’s that simple.

Thanks. And BTW I should have been more specific. I'm not talking about 20 vs 7kg... I'm just getting a feeling for the 8 vs 7 possibility. I read somewhere they will scalp you for 7.05...

I live in HBA and have have flown JQ plenty of times. Not sure if they would scalp you for.05 over, but I’ve seen them do it for 1kg over.

JQ has habits to get on customers for carry on. They will not kill you for 7.05kg (and for such small difference you can put something in your pocket), but may get on you for 8kg. Besides as mentioned above it is not that nice to bring oversized bags on plane at cost of comfort of your fellow travelers. Like to be more flexible? Get QF or Virgin. Like to save money? Get JQ and comply.
Update: for those all concerned about compliance, which is probably a little sanctimonious IMO, didn't break any rules, but can report they never once weighed anyone at all in the departure lounge, either in Mel or Tas, both fwd and rtn. This could be in part because the flights were pretty light on pax so probably they weren't concerned. First time using JQ for a while and have to say I was pretty pleasantly surprised and happy with the service.

JQ are fairly strict regarding carry-ons. For them, it is a revenue opportunity.

If you have a couple of smaller but heavier items just put them in your pockets for a few minutes before boarding.
