I’m QF Platinum. Would be LTG during my next flight. I’m planning to book a business class ticket SYD-LAX on the A380, and going to request a points based upgrade.

What are my chances travelling on a thursday, to get this upgrade?

Your chances are good, if there are spare seats and nobody ahead of you in the queue with higher status. Your chances are bad if the cabin is full on that particular Thursday.

There are usually 4 to 5 first class seats left unsold 3 days prior to the LAX flights so if you are P then it's very likely your upgrade will clear. The only time I've had an issue with an upgrade clearing (once) is when the MEL service cancelled and they were flown to SYD to catch QF 11.

Rarely do they sell all the FC seats your chances are good. I am also P and requested a points upgrade to F on QF 11 last year on the Friday flight and was successful and even managed to get seat 1A.

If you flying alone your chances are good. If you do not mind could you please report here if you succeed or not.

I'm not flying until September 18th. I read somewhere that when it comes to upgrades, if all things are equal between the requests, the timing of when the upgrade was requested plays a part. I will advise in September regardless of me getting the upgrade or not. I'm placing a reminder on my phone to update.

Do let us know the outcome. I hope it comes through for you. Just remember mid September is peak school holiday period. Not suggesting school kids are going to travel FC and 'crowd' you out, but generally all cabins are near capacity from what I've personally seen when travelling in premium cabins during school holiday periods in past years..
