Have booked SYD-PER return in August. Requested upgrade on the PER-SYD leg and have had this confirmed at the time of booking, points deducted already. I'm QFF Platinum and upgrades are never usually confirmed before 48hrs prior. Has this changed?
I believe it's due to an award seat being available. Same thing happened to me a few months ago. Once award seats are gone, it goes back to wait & see.

They're not always instant - ive had plenty of requests that I've waited for including the ones where I've been unsuccessful. I'm Gold, so not sure if Platinum is different...

Domestic upgrades clear instantly if U class seats are available. International - you have to wait until about 48 hours prior.
