I'm booked to travel Mel-Dubai on the 777. This is my first time flying with them and apart from the fib I was told by emirates about their flat beds in business class (that are NOT flat) I've discovered they use their oldest planes on this route. Any views to the contrary would be welcome....so far, regretting this decision to use Emirates...really annoyed about being lied to as well..... nothing I can do as this was a Qantas flight booked on Emirates metal.

I recently flew from Perth to Dubai and the Emirates 777 in Business and found the seat to be perfectly comfortable. You are right that it is not completely flat but there was plenty of space around the seat and I found the angle to be minimal. I had a really good sleep on the flight.
I've flown on both the 777 and A380 in business class on Emirates.
I try to select the A380 where possible but sometimes due to timing and pricing, I go with the 777.
I'd personally much rather the A380 as I quite like the mini bar compartment (not chilled) as well as the on-board bar, Although getting a sleep on the 777 seats is not an issue.
It's worth noting that all of EK's 777-300ERs have angle-flat beds in business class until they start introducing their new business class product (later this year I think??) There's also a few 777-300s (non ER) in the EK fleet although I don't believe that they fly to Australia (I've got one booked between Cairo and Dubai later this year).

For what it counts, with emirates, their average fleet age across their 777s is 6.5 Years, their oldest being delivered in '99.

They also operate their flagship A380 on this route, so you can't really say that they're neglecting Melbourne.
