I hope it’s good news for all AMEX card members, but I’ve received a letter outlining the changes reported earlier that advises my points will be doubled to offset the redemption changes ie no devaluation after all. I’m a Platinum Charge customer so not sure if it’s targeted, but a good move. Letter says it will happen automatically by 15 June 2019. The double points will be based on the points balance at 1am AEST 15 April 2019.

You're lucky!

The link for the AMEX Explorer FAQ page shows that "Your points balance will remain the same, however the rate at which you redeem points will increase from 15 April 2019. This means you will need more points to redeem travel, hotels, experiences, goods and gift cards at eligible partners from 15 April 2019."

That sucks if that’s the case, although it also says the same thing under the Platinum Charge page...hopefully everyone gets the letter!

It's targeted: the rule is that points balances aren't being doubled, but exceptions are being made for selected customers based on a few different factors.

So far it seems every charge card holder got the offer, but not explorer/edge holder.

Very bad publicity though. I know where Amex is coming from, those people who have paid high annual fees need to be compensated yet those that chose to be cheap with explorer/edge are expendable.

I personally am a bit offended by this. I chose explorer/edge over Plat charge mainly cuz charge card doesn't suit me. I don't dine in restaurants that accepts much so Explorer/edge combo meets my need better. I spent $10-20k on average a month on Amex but now they classified me as not important.

If I had known that one of charge's perk is "protection against future devaluation" I might've signed up charge already. But they never gave us that chance.

I have not received the letter (Plat Charge Card), am O/S but have my mail monitored, I did miss a call from Amex the other day - they called at 03:00 my time...

I am hoping the letter comes soon as I need to make the decision on transferring points to QF before 30 Nov to take advantage of their bonus offer.

I am in the same position as you. No letter yet. Rang my Centurion Relationship Manager, and after expressing frustration about the devaluation and telling her that I wanted to know the position so that I could take advantage of the Qantas offer, she reassured me that the letter was coming and that my points would be doubled. The Centurion mini site also has the general statement in its FAQs section that your points balance will stay the same.

I received the same generic letter. It seems the points balance as at 15 April 2019 will be doubled. So the offer simply protects those points not transferred. Therefore I see no reason not to transfer now at the current conversion rate to take advantage of the QF offer or am I missing something? If points are transferred before 15 April 2019 the double points offer is of no use and even further the additional points will not be uploaded until 15 June 2019.

You are not missing anything per se, it is just that a lot of us do not want to put all our eggs in the Qantas basket, but would prefer to maintain the value of our points to transfer them to any program as needed. I was dreading dumping all of my points in my QFF account. While the 45% bonus was the best use of them, and I would have done it for the additional reason that they would not expire unlike Emirates, for instance, it still meant that I would have had many millions of MR points trapped in Qantas.
