Cathay’s status shake-up: milestone benefits, Diamond Exec tier

Cathay Pacific is revamping its Cathay rewards program with a number of significant changes – and loyalists will be pleased to hear there’s no sign of a shift to the controversial system of spend-based status being adopted by many airlines.

This in itself is good news, but better news is what the new Cathay program does deliver.

The benefits swing right across the board from entry-level Cathay Green members to top-tier Diamonds once the platform reboot happens on 1 January 2027 (yes, the airline is giving members a solid 14 months’ notice).

An end to the great reset

For starters, and this is long overdue, Status Points will no longer reset to zero after reaching a new tier.

Once you hit the necessary 300 Status Points to attain Cathay Silver, you can keep earning to 600 Status Points for Gold and even soar through to 1,200 Status Points for Diamond status, all within the same year.

And speaking of years: Cathay is moving to an annual membership cycle, spanning from 1 January to 31 December, instead of each member’s year starting on the date they first joined the program.

“When your membership renews or changes in 2026 under the existing membership programme rules, whatever status you hold at that point will be valid until 31 December 2026,” the airline says.

“On 1 January 2027, your membership status will be determined by the Status Points you have earned from 1 January – 31 December 2026, based on the new requirements of the membership programme.”

Status Points rollover

On top of this, excess Status Points above your current tier will roll over from one year to the next for Cathay Gold members and higher, at up to 50% of the number of Status Points required to earn the attained status.

Members who have maintained Diamond status for a minimum of five cumulative years will be eligible for a complimentary Diamond membership year for every 6,000 Status Points accumulated within their membership lifetime.

There’s no limit to how many complimentary Diamond years they can bank, and they’ll be able to claim that gratis Diamond status year whenever needed – such as in a year when their travel is reduced and they face the risk of dropping back to Cathay Gold.

Diamond Exec makes its debut

And the highest of high-flying Diamonds can look forward to unlocking a new Diamond Exec tier once they hit 2,400 Status Points within a single year.

Headline perks of this ‘Diamond plus’ proposition include

  • departure buggy service at Hong Kong International Airport for Cathay flights leaving from gates 40-80 for the Diamond member and a guest
  • four single-sector Upgrade Passes, for a single upgrade to the next immediate class, all the way through to first class)
  • one complimentary Gold Companion membership for a family member or a friend
  • a hotline to “a dedicated Relationship Manager” to address any specific travel needs

Rounding things out are fresh milestone benefits – currently referred to as mid-status benefits – for Green and Silver members who clock up a specific number of Status Points each year.

Cathay Green members will learn about their new milestone benefits towards the end of 2026, while Cathay Silver members will receive two Cathay Pacific business class lounge passes at 450 Status Points.

Some perks are pruned...

But you can’t make a Hong Kong Egg Tart without breaking some eggs.

All mid-status benefits for Gold and Diamond members are being removed from 1 January 2027, although those earned in 2026 will remain valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

That includes business and first class lounge passes, bookable upgrades and for Diamonds, a Gold companion card.

Diamonds also lose their complimentary buggy rides at HKIA, as these gravitate to the new Diamond Exec tier.

However, replacing the mid-tier Diamond benefit of four Bookable Upgrades, there will be two Upgrade Passes available immediately on reaching or renewing Diamond status, although those passes won’t be valid for a bump from business to first.

I've been waiting for this one to drop, given all the rumours of changes on the way. My take is that all up it's pretty decent. Diamonds will be narked to lose some benefits to Diamond Exec but I like that bookable upgrades will be for all Diamonds instead of just being a mid-tier benefit for some. Gold is still the 'sweet spot' and Diamond still has a lot going for it.
