New Qantas lounge for Vancouver
Upgrading the pre-flight experience ahead of the red-tailed QF76 to Sydney.
Vancouver remains a popular destination for Qantas, sufficiently so that its Sydney-Vancouver flights moved in 2021 from a ski-friendly seasonal schedule to running all year round.
And now there’s new Qantas lounge at Vancouver, too – and it welcomes business class passengers, frequent flyers and even Qantas Club members.
The airline previously used the SkyTeam Lounge at Vancouver’s international terminal.
And while the SkyTeam lounge generally ticks the airport lounge boxes, it’s also an aesthetically ‘cold’ design can become very crowded (and very noisy) ahead of the Qantas flight.
But Qantas has now made the switch to the Vancouver lounge of Oneworld sibling Cathay Pacific, and this is a definite upgrade by every measure.
Located between gates D70 and D71, Cathay’s Vancouver lounge shares the same warm ‘understated luxury design as its cousins in London and across Asia, including of course The Pier at Hong Kong.
There’s a variety of seating for 108 people, but with Qantas’ flight QF76 to Sydney departing at 10.20pm and the next Cathay flight to Hong Kong leaving at 12.30am, the lounge isn’t likely to be too crowded.
Cathay Pacific has confirmed to Executive Traveller that in addiiton to its Vancouver lounge opening four hours prior to the departure of all Cathay Pacific flights, the doors swing open “four hours prior to the departure of Qantas flight QF76 on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.”
It’s worth noting that under Qantas’ agreement with Cathay Pacific there is now lounge access for Qantas Club members, who were previously excluded from the SkyTeam Vancouver lounge.
Like most Cathay Pacific lounges, a highlight of any visit will be the signature Noodle Bar, serving up a selection of freshly-made dishes including wonton noodle soup and the slightly spicier dan dan noodle soup.
The Pantry offers cold cuts, a selection of cheeses, salads, international hot food, fruits and desserts; there’s also a choice of wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages.
There’s also a panoramic view from a 3-metre-high window running the entire length of the lounge, which looks out directly onto the airfield and Vancouver's coastal mountains beyond.

Flew QF76 on 12 April. The Skyteam lounge is the least desirable lounge in YVR and I've been in all of them in the last year.. Bailed and found an emty gate area, way more comfortable.
Used the Cathay lounge in Feb this year. Simply delightful. I rate it ahead of both AC's Gold level lounge and the new Plaza Lounge. Nothing beats AC's Signature lounge though.

As a FF you could already use this partner lounge? Unless of course it was not open for the QF flight… noting the QC entry is new….. also I don’t know but surly an AA lounge or Alaska lounge is also avaliable ?

The CX lounge wasn't open in time for QF76, Cathay has extended its opening hours now, apparently that was done with the Qantas 'contract'.

1. They don’t, easily google-able.
2. Even if they did, you can’t access any USA-airline lounges unless flying directly to the USA. They’re all in their own terminal beyond American passport control, which you go through in Canada before departure. Also easily google-able.
3. “I don’t know but surely (insert dumb thought)” is why everything is the pits. Take ten seconds and check - I bet the people you know will appreciate it.

I could go on and on about the CX lounge in YVR. Love it! QF passengers are in for a treat!

This little "Winged Warrior" does intermittent travel to Canada each year but my business localities that I have to frequent are all on the eastern seaboard so always use Vancouver as a transit point. Air Canada service is great as it arrives at a sensible time of the day (early morning) and domestic connections get you across to Toronto in daylight. Also, do not have to fetch and re-check luggage through to Toronto. Just clear immigration and off you go to your domestic connection gate.
Qantas with their almost 5.30 pm arrival timing into Vancouver (8.30 pm Toronto) is just totally unsuitable.
If Qantas had an arrival timer around 6.00 - 7.00 am, this little warrior would use that service all the time but until that happens, will have to use the Air Canada service.

Would any happen to know if I gifted one of my Qantas lounge passes to my son flying home on QF76, would he be able to 'redeem' it at the Cathay Lounge? If not, do you know if he can use it anywhere at YVR or not bother? Thanks!

Qantas lounge passes can only be used at Qantas lounges, so there's no point in gifting a lounge pass to your son to use in Vancouver.
