Qatar Airways to open new Bangkok lounge

Qatar Airways’ Bangkok Premium Lounge is a high quality way for passengers to begin their journey on the airline’s five daily flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Doha.

It’s also the best choice for business class travellers on Oneworld airlines, most notably Qantas but also Finnair and Malaysia Airlines (at least when the lounge’s opening hours align with MH departures).

As is the case with most Qatar Airways’ Pemium Lounge around the world, the Bangkok lounge admits only first and business class passengers, with frequent flyers directed to cool their heels in other lounges.

In the case of Bangkok, this includes the airline-operated Air France, Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines lounges, along with the independent Miracle Lounge.

However, the Qatar Airways Bangkok Premium Lounge is on the move.

Work is now underway on an all-new Bangkok Premium Lounge located at the airport’s ‘midfield satellite’ terminal, which makes plenty of sense given that all Qatar Airways flights now depart from this terminal (and have done so since early 2024).

What looks to be an impressively large space is right now just a cavernous shell, although Executive Traveller understands the airline is aiming for a ribbon-cutting by the end of this year.

When that happens, Qatar Airways is expected to shutter its lounge in the main terminal – removing another premium lounge option for business class passengers on Oneworld member airlines.

(While the two terminals are connected by a zippy ‘automated people mover’ train, similar to those seen at Singapore and Hong Kong, the local airport authority tells Executive Traveller that only passengers departing on flights from the ‘midfield satellite’ terminal are allowed to board the inter-terminal train).

As previously reported, Emirates earlier this year shifted its Bangkok lounge (and flights) to the satellite terminal – a move which means the lounge is now unavailable to eligible Qantas passengers heading to Sydney.

The relocation of Qatar Airways’ Bangkok Premium Lounge will similarly reduce the Oneworld lounge options.

While Cathay Pacific’s Bangkok Lounge has been a long-standing winner for Oneworld Emerald and Sapphire frequent flyers (including Qantas Platinums and Golds), as well as many business class passengers, overcrowding has lately seen the lounge often made available only for Cathay passengers during peak hours.

This includes Qantas’ 6pm flight to Sydney, which is bracketed by Cathay flights at 5.30pm and 7pm.

As a result, many Qantas passengers report being redirected to the Air France lounge, which sadly doesn’t measure up to the CX or QR offerings.

I really like Qatar approach when they shy away all frequent flyer mob and welcome only Business and First class pax. All status pax should go to places like Marhaba lounges. Or using your status upgrade your ticket and then you are welcome.

As an Australian website, most viewers here will be on QF. Unfortunately this means another excellent lounge option lost to the midfield terminal. I hope one day they allow all pax to go to the midfield terminal.

Perhaps it is time for the Airline Lounge arrangements to be modified - globally.

Not only return the lounges to F and J passengers only as in this report, but also to reduce the number of lounges to reduce lounge hop prior to flights with passengers designated a single lounge to enjoy. Some terminals have up to 5 lounges or more shared within alliances with passengers coffee hopping prior to their departure - dilutes the desired effect of a quiet haven for the well traveled to enjoy.
