Singapore Airlines moves to all-beds in business class

Singapore Airlines will further elevate its business class experience this month, with the flag carrier moving to flatbeds on every plane.

While lie-flat beds have long been the standard for long-range international business class, that’s not always the case on shorter regional hops.

So here’s the scenario: you fly into Singapore Airlines’ hub at Changi on one of the big jets such as an Airbus A380, bound for your final stop somewhere else in Asia.

Perhaps you’re arriving at Changi in the early morning, or the very late evening, and looking forward to a few hours of sleep on the second leg of your journey.

Would you rather be in a reclining business class seat, or one which transforms into a flat bed?

From Monday October 27 that won’t be an issue, as this weekend sees Singapore Airlines retire the last regional Boeing 737 jet with business class recliners.

The latest 737 Max aircraft already feature business class bed, but the older 737-800 jets inherited from SQ’s SilkAir regional arm were the weak link in the chain.

These older planes also lacked video screens and inflight WiFi – omissions which SQ spun as ‘luxuriate in an undisturbed break and recharge. No work, no messages, no worries.’

With the ex-SilkAir fleet put out to pasture, this also means every Singapore Airlines flight features free Wi-Fi for every passenger from tip to tail (in premium economy and economy, you’ll need to be a member of the airline’s KrisFlyer loyalty program).

The shift will see Singapore Airlines as one of the world’s very few airlines with 100% lie-flat business class across both single-aisle and twin-aisle jets, and reflects an increasing push towards premium travel.

In fact, Singapore Airlines is setting itself up for a decidedly premium push over the coming months.

We’ll soon see the first of the new SilverKris Lounges at Changi Terminal 2, which will share their design DNA and signature elements with the flagship T3 lounges, while also boasting 50% more space and seating capacity.

Changi T2 is used not only by Singapore Airlines but also some Star Alliance partners such as ANA, Lufthansa and Thai Airways.

“Building on the success of our Terminal 3 lounges, we are extending our signature hospitality and thoughtfully curated offerings to Terminal 2,” notes Yeoh Phee Teik, the airline’s Senior Vice President Customer Experience

“This upgrade reaffirms our continued dedication to providing a seamless, world-class experience that meets the high expectations of our discerning customers.”

Set to open in the coming weeks, the new Changi T2 First Class SilverKris Lounge will feature a spacious area with increased capacity, higher ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The renovated bar will offer a premium experience, including barista services in the morning.

Live cooking stations in the First Class SilverKris Lounge will serve a wide range of popular Singaporean, Asian, and Western cuisine of dishes, while the self-service
buffet will also be expanded to mirror the offerings available at T3.

2026-2027 will see a similar transformation of the Changi T2 Business Class SilverKris Lounge and KrisFlyer Gold Lounge.

The business class lounge will include a quiet rest area with recliners where passengers can relax before their flight, and a living room area with diverse seating options including wingback chairs, sofa seats, and productivity pods.

An expanded self-service buffet will feature both Asian and Western cuisines, while a full-service bar will complement the dining experience, serving fresh barista-
made coffee in the morning and signature cocktails in the evening.

And for frequent flyers travelling in premium economy and economy, the KrisFlyer Gold Lounge will double its capacity and be decked out with armchairs  workstations and a dining area, while there will finally be shower suites and bathrooms within the lounge itself.

Also on the cards for SQ: the launch of all-new private business class suites and first class suites, the likely roll-out of pyjamas and a caviar service on long-range business class routes, and a refresh of premium economy.

I fly Singapore air long hall lot and I hate their current business class flat bed offer . If I didn’t have the high FF level(PPS) I wouldn’t bother. Sleeping at an angle is not comfortable on long hall flights and the good in flight service some not balance this off . I wait with interest on when the changes take place, as far as lounge comfort goes , the less time I spend in a lounge the better.
