Qantas enlists David Jones as frequent flyer partner

Qantas frequent flyers are now able to earn points for shopping at upmarket retailer David Jones on the DJ’s American Express Card.

The deal sees Reward Points on David Jones’ plastic converted to Qantas Frequent Flyer points at a rate of of 1 to 0.75 – mean that 1 Reward Point becomes 0.75 frequent flyer points.

(There’s also the option to turn your DJs points into American Express Membership Rewards at a straight 1:1 ratio.)

David Jones has also launched a Platinum edition of its American Express credit card, with an earn rate of 4 Reward Points per $1 spent at David Jones and 3 Rewards Points for dollar at major supermarkets and petrol stations.

However, the conversion rate for Qantas remains the same as the standard cards.

David Jones already counts several airlines among its roster of partners, among then Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand, Cathy Pacific and Singapore Airlines.

The Qantas Frequent Flyer programme remains a perennial pleaser on the Red Roo’s balance sheet, raking in $1.2 billion in the 2011-2012 financial year to deliver a $231m profit – a welcome bit of black ink considering Qantas’ overall $244 million loss in that same period.

Qantas now claims 8.6 million frequent flyers on its books, and with a 9% growth is edging ever closer to its goal of 10 million members by mid-2013.

The airline’s preliminary final report reveals that 5.1 million awards were redeemed, up 16% from 2010-2011, with over one million of those through the Qantas Frequent Flyer store.

Total points billings climbed  by 14% to a of $1.18 billion, with a “record credit card billings driven by increased spend and new card products.”

That's a pretty poor deal, 1 DJ point for 0.75 QF points, even on their Platinum Amex card. I would have expected the Platinum card to have a better rate, even if that was just 1-to-1.

Its actually quite a good deal considering you ear 3 points at supermarkets and petrol stations. thats 2.25 points per $1 spent... Unless i've read that wrong!

No you're right, 3 points per dollar at supermarkets and service stations, so that's 2.25 QF points, still I just think a 1:1 conversion should be the standard and maybe a 25% bonus for Amex Platinum.

3 points per dollar would be amazing, but still 2.25, can't complain about that with a $99 fee... Tempted to apple to replace my current amex now.

The way most other (I can think of only one exception) Qantas credit cards work is that its a direct earn based on the amount spent instead of the ability to convert points for one system into Qantas points.

Therefore the DJ program probably earns DJ points with the ability to convert into Amex/Virgin/Singapore/Cathay; or, the ability to directly earn QFF points at a rate of 0.75 per dollar INSTEAD of earning DJ points.

Though, I'm still waiting for details myself.

All these mentins of QF and DJ, I think we'll be glad when Virgin Australia changes its code from 'DJ' to 'VA'!
