Hi, when booking a business class fare from say Philadelphia through DFW/SYD/BNE in business class on QF's website, are the domestic legs seated in the first class cabin in the US and business in Aus?
On some very rare occasions, and I have seen this in Aust QFd flights, you will see an exclamation mark in the fare, even if its "business cabin" up top, the exclamation will, if you hover over it, say your seat from so and so to so and so will be in economy. And if you are paying quite a tidy sum, and you see this, it does leave a bitter taste in the mouth, that they would even dare do such a thing. Granted some planes only have Y, ie, the Dash 8, but if the plane is a 737, with J, and you get put into Y, its not good.

In fairness to Qantas, the issue may be that AA isn't offering Qantas J fares for that sector. Its happened to me when flying BNE-LAS - yet when I check prices on just BNE-LAX the fare is the same...
To answer your question - if the domestic US sector is on a two class aircraft, then your QF Business ticket will see you seated in AA's First class. (Effectively, AA call their Business class "First" on two-class domestics). this would indeed by the case from Philadelphia. If, however, you were flying out of New York or Miami, and were on a 3 class aircraft (F, J, Y), then a Qantas Business ticket will seat you in AA Business. Either way, you get Business status credits and points.
So if the US call J class FIRST class, what is F class called?
There is no higher class on 2 class domestic aircraft, that's the whole point. What we call "Business" on domestics, they call "First". You might not recall, but when Ansett moved from 3 class to 2 class domestics in the late 90s, they called the remaining premium class "Business First" (same as UA).
On three class flights you'll get first/business/coach. Those flights are generally referred to as transcon flights. On two class you get first/coach.
If you book business from Australia on Qantas with a domestic connection on AA generally that leg will be in AA first. But plenty of regional flights here are coach only. And on some of those there also no real overhead storage. So you get to valet check your carry on as well.

In the US - they dub their business class as "first class" hence why you're seeing it displayed.
